Chapter 3 - THE SECRET OF THE BRIEFCASE

Sitting on his knee in his tailored suit, Adrian looked closely at the tiny girl.
Up close, the resemblance to his brother was subtle, buried beneath childhood soft features, but the sheer, fearless energy radiating from her was undeniably familiar. James had been the exact same way as a child—defying their father's strict estate rules, marching into formal dinners in oversized adult clothes, and turning every serious moment into a game.
Adrian pointed his index finger toward the bright pink plastic purse clutched securely under Nora’s arm.
"So," Adrian asked, a faint trace of humor touching his voice. "What’s in the briefcase?"
Nora immediately pulled the plastic purse closer to her chest, wrapping both of her small arms around it with protective, dramatic secrecy.
"Important papers," Nora declared, nodding her head so hard her pink hair bow bounced. "Very important."
Emma’s breath hitched loudly in her throat.
She took two rapid, anxious steps forward onto the marble, her face tight with a sudden, suffocating panic that caught Adrian’s attention instantly.
"Nora!" Emma commanded, her voice sharper and higher than anyone had ever heard it. "Leave that closed! Put it away right now!"
Adrian slowly lifted his head. His dark, analytical eyes moved away from the child and locked onto Emma's face.
He had known Emma for two years. She was the most soft-spoken, disciplined, and unobtrusive member of his domestic staff. She never raised her voice; she never lost her composure; she followed every estate protocol with quiet perfection. Yet right now, standing near the mahogany pedestal, she looked genuinely terrified—her chest heaving, her knuckles white as she clutched her apron, her eyes wide with a desperate, wild panic.
"Emma?" Adrian asked, his brows drawing together in genuine puzzle. "It’s just a toy. Why are you so nervous?"
Emma swallowed hard, her throat clicking in the quiet foyer. She tried to force a polite, professional smile onto her face, but it flickered and died immediately.
"I... I’m sorry, Mr. Cole," Emma stammered, her voice trembling. "She... she shouldn't be bothering you with her toys. She knows she isn't supposed to bring her things into the grand hall. I'll take her to the staff kitchen right now—"

"She isn't bothering me," Adrian interrupted quietly, his tone firm, searching, and entirely calm.
He turned his attention back down to Nora.
