Chapter 4 - THE DEEPER SHADOW

Mercer swallowed hard, his hands trembling violently as he bent down to retrieve his dropped folder. He stepped toward the reception counter, his eyes darting frantically between Ethan’s stone-hard face and the two terrified receptionists standing behind the mahogany desk.

"M-Mr. Vance," Mercer stammered, his polished executive aura completely shattered. "He... he is Ethan Vance. He owns the Vance Hospitality Group. He... he owns this hotel. He owns all fourteen properties in the chain."

Claire’s mouth fell open. Her eyes went wide as saucers as she stared at the man in the sleeveless leather vest, the dusty motorcycle boots, and the heavy tattoos. A cold, nauseating panic flooded her chest as she realized she had just told the multi-millionaire owner of the entire luxury franchise to "try somewhere near the highway."

Lupita instantly stood up straight, bowing her head slightly in deep, respectful silence.

Ethan slowly turned his body to face Mercer. "My suite was marked unavailable three hours ago, Daniel. My daughter was promised her mother’s room tonight. Explain it to me."

Mercer’s hands shook so badly that the papers inside his folder rattled. He took a slow, hesitant step closer to Ethan, lowering his voice into a hushed, trembling whisper that didn't reach the front desk.

But instead of looking Ethan in the eyes, Mercer’s gaze kept darting nervously past Ethan’s shoulder—staring intently at the glowing indicator lights above the private brass elevator at the back of the lobby.

Ethan’s sharp eyes picked up the subtle gesture instantly. His dark brow furrowed.

"What?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl.

Mercer swallowed hard, sweat glinting on his forehead under the crystal chandeliers.

"You... you weren't supposed to arrive tonight, sir," Mercer whispered, his voice trembling with sheer dread. "The schedule... your private office notified us you were arriving on Friday."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. "I personally updated my arrival time with executive security yesterday morning. Only three people had access to that routing."

Ethan stepped closer to Mercer, his heavy frame towering over the suit-clad manager.

"Who knew I was coming tonight, Daniel?" Ethan demanded quietly.

Mercer went completely silent, his jaw trembling, refusing to speak a single word.

Then, behind them, the brass arrow above the private VIP elevator lit up once more.

DING.

The elevator had reached the penthouse floor, paused for three seconds, and was now rapidly descending back toward the grand lobby.
