Chapter 2 - THE FRAGILE PROMISE

Ethan stopped three feet from the desk.
His jaw set firm, a sharp flare of dark authority rising in his eyes, but he kept his posture perfectly relaxed. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't slam his hand on the marble. He simply looked down at the delicate child resting against his collarbone, feeling her tiny, rhythmic breaths against his chest.
Lily stirred slightly, her small hand tightening around the worn ear of her mother’s stuffed rabbit.
She rubbed her nose against Ethan’s neck, her long eyelashes fluttering open as she looked up with groggy, innocent brown eyes at the grand crystal chandelier hanging far above them.
"Daddy..." Lily murmured, her voice small, raspy, and filled with childhood fatigue. "Are we... are we still seeing Mommy’s picture? The big one in the hallway?"
Ethan shifted his weight smoothly, cradling her tiny frame closer to his heart. He leaned his face down, gently pressing his lips against her soft forehead, inhaling the sweet scent of baby shampoo and fresh mountain road air.
"Yes, sweetheart," Ethan whispered softly, his deep voice dropping into a comforting, tender cadence. "We're going to see Mommy's painting tonight. Just like I promised you."
Two feet away behind the front desk sat Lupita.
At twenty-four, Lupita was a junior front-desk agent wearing the same crisp navy uniform, her dark hair pulled back into a neat, professional bun. Unlike Claire, Lupita’s eyes weren't fixed on Ethan’s leather vest or tattooed neck. She was watching the tender interaction between the rugged biker and his tired daughter—and her eyes caught the precise, rare variety of deep-red roses in his hand.
Lupita quietly turned to her computer terminal, her fingers flying rapidly across the mechanical keyboard, tapping into the hotel’s central reservation management system.
Claire noticed her junior colleague typing and scoffed softly. "Lupita, don't bother. He doesn't belong here. Just tell him to clear the entry."
Lupita ignored her. She stared intensely at the glowing screen, her dark eyes widening in sudden, utter bewilderment. She refreshed the main directory once, then twice, before slowly lifting her head to stare at Ethan.
"His reservation is here," Lupita whispered, her voice trembling slightly with sudden realization.
Claire froze, her smug expression faltering. "What?"
Lupita pointed at the blinking line of text on her screen, leaning closer to Claire. "Ethan Vance. Executive Presidential Suite. Confirmed six months ago."
Lupita looked back up at Ethan, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. "It... it says here someone manually accessed the system and marked it unavailable at three o'clock this afternoon."

Ethan slowly raised his head. He reached out with his right hand and gently placed the bouquet of twelve red roses flat onto the cold, polished marble counter directly between the two receptionists.
"Call your general manager," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an absolute, immovable command.
