Chapter 7 - "THEY FOUND HER"

The exchange of gunfire was brief, brutal, and calculated.

Across the street, a dark sedan with tinted windows screeched away from the rear alley of the textile warehouse, its tires smoking against the wet asphalt as it vanished into the industrial labyrinth of the lower canal district.

"Vehicle fleeing eastbound!" one of the secondary guards shouted, his weapon still trained on the alleyway. "Pursuit team is mobile!"

"Hold your fire!" Dante’s voice barked over the rain. "Do not pursue into the canal sector! Secure the primary asset!"

Dante moved with rapid, aggressive strides around the rear bumper of the SUV, his weapon lowered to the low-ready position, his sharp eyes sweeping the rooftops and cross streets before dropping to one knee beside the vehicle.

Alessandro did not immediately move. He remained hunched over Sophia, his hands buried in her wet chestnut hair, his broad back an impenetrable wall of muscle and Kevlar-lined tailoring. He checked her with rapid, frantic touches—running his scarred hands over her shoulders, her ribs, her legs—his gray eyes wild with an intense, terrifying vigilance.

"Are you hit?" Alessandro demanded, his voice hoarse, ragged with adrenaline. "Sophia, look at me! Did you catch glass? Are you bleeding?!"

Sophia looked up through the damp strands of hair plastered across her face. Her chest was heaving in short, terrified gasps, her white waitress blouse soaked through with rain and dirty street water, but her eyes were wide, clear, and uninjured.

"I'm... I’m okay," she whispered, her voice trembling so violently her teeth clicked together. "Alessandro, I’m not hit. I'm okay."

Alessandro closed his eyes for a single, shuddering second, letting out a long, ragged exhale that sounded almost like a prayer.

Then, his face hardened back into absolute, unforgiving granite.

He rose smoothly, hauling Sophia up with him, keeping his arm securely wrapped around her waist, tucking her against his hip as Dante reached their side.

Dante was breathing hard, the rain streaming down his trimmed beard, his tailored suit spattered with brick dust and shattered glass. His expression was grim—not the look of an enforcer who had just repelled a random street robbery, but the face of a soldier who had just realized an ancient, buried war had resurfaced on their doorstep.

"Dante," Alessandro growled, his voice a low, lethal vibration that cut through the storm. "Report."

Dante looked directly at his boss, then his eyes flicked down to Sophia with an expression of profound, chilling dread.

"The shooter wasn't local muscle, Boss," Dante said, his voice flat, heavy as lead. "The ballistic profile was a seven-point-six-two match-grade round. Subsonic. Professional extraction spotter. The loan sharks didn't send this team."

Dante paused, taking a breath before delivering the verdict.

"Boss... they found her."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from Dante’s grim, scarred face up to Alessandro, the confusion and terror clawing at her sanity.

"Who found me?" Sophia asked, her voice cracking as she clutched Alessandro’s damp lapel with her uninjured hand. "What are you talking about?! What does a sniper have to do with my aunt's debt?!"

Alessandro did not answer her immediately.

He slowly turned his head toward her. His cold gray eyes, which had held a flicker of warmth when he bandaged her palm inside the bakery, were completely dead. The mask had dropped; the ruthless Don of Bellhaven had taken over entirely, his gaze colder than the rain falling from the sky.

"The loan sharks didn't buy your aunt's debt, Sophia," Alessandro said, each word falling like an iron plate onto stone.

"The debt was engineered to force you out of hiding. To force you to use your real identity at a municipal bank."

He tightened his grip on her waist, pulling her closer against his side.

"The people who shot at that window," Alessandro murmured, his voice sending a wave of absolute horror straight down her spine, "are the people who murdered your father."
