Chapter 10 - THE SOVEREIGN VOW

Alessandro did not flinch from the accusation.
He leaned forward in the darkened cabin of the speeding SUV, closing the distance between them until his broad shoulders blocked out the passing city lights, his cold gray eyes boring directly into hers with an intensity that burned through the shadows.
"I married you because the moment your father was murdered, you became the most hunted woman on the North American continent," Alessandro said, his baritone low, savage, and vibrating with an unshakeable, terrifying truth.
"The Chicago families knew Arthur had a daughter. They knew the keys were tied to your bloodline. If you had stayed an unmarried civilian named Sophia Chen, you would have been abducted from your college dorm within forty-eight hours, tortured until you signed the power of attorney, and thrown into the lake in a concrete barrel."
His large hand reached out, his fingers gently, reverently closing around her bandaged right hand, his thumb resting over the knot of his blood-stained white silk handkerchief.
"The only way to keep you breathing," Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate vulnerability that stripped away the mafia boss entirely, "was to put my ring on your finger. In Bellhaven, nobody touches the wife of Alessandro Caruso and lives to see the dawn. I put my name around your neck like an iron shield."
Sophia’s chest heaved, her brown eyes searching his hard, sculpted features for any trace of deceit.
"And then you locked me away," she wept softly, the pain of two years of isolation pouring out of her throat. "You put armed guards outside my bedroom. You wouldn't let me leave the estate. You treated me like a prisoner until I couldn't breathe anymore!"
"Because every time you stepped onto a sidewalk, my snipers had to take down three spotters!" Alessandro roared softly, his grip on her hand tightening with desperate, possessive force.
"I was fighting a three-front war to keep you alive, Sophia! When you ran two years ago... when you left that ring on my dresser... do you have any idea what it did to me?! I tore this city apart! I put bounties on fifty tracking firms! I didn't let you stay in that bakery because I wanted you gone—I let you stay because my intelligence told me the Chicago syndicate had lost your scent, and keeping you in an ordinary routine was the only thing keeping their satellite surveillance from locking onto your face!"
He reached out his other hand, his calloused fingertips gently brushing the damp, chestnut waves back from her forehead, his touch as tender as a father's blessing.
"Then your aunt made those debts," Alessandro said, his jaw tightening into lethal stone. "The loan sharks ran her social security number through a commercial clearinghouse. The moment the Chen name appeared on a default notice in Bellhaven, the Chicago syndicate’s automated wiretaps flagged the address. The sniper at the bakery window was their advance scout."
The SUV slowed, turning sharply through a set of towering wrought-iron gates flanked by high stone walls and armed sentries. The vehicle rolled up the sweeping, circular driveway of the Caruso coastal compound—a fortress of limestone, bulletproof glass, and manicured pines overlooking the roaring ocean.
Dante killed the engine, remaining silent in the front seat, keeping his eyes on the security monitors.
Inside the quiet vehicle, Alessandro picked up the cream envelope.
He did not keep it for himself. With slow, reverent deliberation, he placed the heavy paper into Sophia’s trembling, bandaged hands.
"This belongs to you, Sophia," Alessandro said softly. "Your father's final words. The key to the truth. And the evidence that will let me burn every man who ever made you cry."
He leaned down, his forehead gently pressing against hers, his breath warm and steady against her skin as the rain drummed softly on the reinforced roof above them.
"You ran from me for two years," Alessandro whispered, his voice carrying the weight of an eternal, unbreakable sovereign oath. "You can hate me for the rest of your life. You can sleep in a separate wing of this house. But you are never leaving my sight again. I will slaughter every syndicate from here to Lake Michigan before I let them touch a single hair on your head."
Sophia looked down at the envelope in her hands.
She looked at her father's elegant, slanting handwriting: For my beloved Sophia.
She looked at the white silk handkerchief wrapped around her bleeding palm, stained with her blood, tied by the hand of the most feared monster in the city.
She was no longer an exhausted waitress hiding in the corner of Moretti’s Bakery, scrubbing coffee off the floor to pay forty dollars on a loan shark's ledger.

She was the keeper of her father’s legacy, the sovereign key to an empire, and the wife of an apex predator who had just declared war on the world to bring her home.
Sophia lifted her head, meeting Alessandro’s cold gray eyes through her tears, and for the first time in two years, she did not pull her hand away.
