Chapter 6 - SHATTERED GLASS AT THE CURB

Sophia hesitated on the wet curb, the rain stinging her eyes, the white silk handkerchief around her palm rapidly soaking through with a mixture of rainwater and scarlet blood.
The open door of the black SUV was a mouth of leather and shadow—an entrance back into the gilded, violent cage she had spent two years running from. If she stepped into that vehicle, the waitress named Sophia Chen would cease to exist. She would once again become Sophia Caruso, the protected, isolated possession of the most dangerous man in the state.
She looked at Alessandro. He stood beside her in the pouring rain, his dark hair plastered against his forehead, the water running in clean tracks through his dark stubble, his tailored suit completely ruined by the downpour. Yet he didn't blink. He held the door open, his eyes fixed on her face with a raw, agonizing patience that terrified her more than his anger ever could.
"Sophia," Alessandro said softly, his voice cutting through the hiss of the storm. "Get in the car. It’s warm."
"Alessandro, I can't—"
CRACK.
The sound was not thunder. It was the sharp, violent whip-crack of a high-caliber supersonic round tearing through the atmospheric pressure of the street.
A split second later, the massive display window of Moretti’s Bakery directly behind them imploded.
The heavy plate glass did not merely shatter; it detonated into thousands of glittering, razor-sharp shards that sprayed outward across the sidewalk like a burst of crystalline shrapnel. A high-powered rifle bullet punched through the masonry above the doorframe, throwing a cloud of pulverized red brick dust and white flour into the rain.
Sophia gasped, her hands flying to her ears as the concussive roar of the shot echoed off the surrounding buildings.
She didn't have time to fall.
Before the shattered glass could even touch the pavement, Alessandro moved with a terrifying, instantaneous speed that defied his massive size.
His large arm wrapped around Sophia’s waist like an iron band, lifting her completely off her feet. In the same violent, fluid motion, Alessandro pivoted his body, throwing his massive, muscular frame over hers, slamming them both down against the reinforced steel side of the black SUV.
He pinned her beneath his chest, tucking her head firmly under his armpit, shielding her face and neck with his own broad back as a second round struck the armored roof of the vehicle with a deafening metallic THWACK.
Shards of glass showered across Alessandro’s tailored black jacket, bouncing harmlessly off the heavy wool, but not a single piece touched Sophia.
"Down! Stay down!" Alessandro roared, his voice stripping away every shred of civil restraint, returning to the lethal commander of the Caruso syndicate.
Across the sidewalk, Dante and the two secondary drivers reacted with ruthless, military precision.
Their long coats were thrown back in an instant. Heavy, suppressed automatic pistols cleared their holsters in a synchronized blur of black steel. Dante took cover behind the engine block of the SUV, his weapon raised, his eyes tracking the second-floor windows of an abandoned brick textile warehouse eighty yards down the opposite side of the avenue.
Pfft-pfft-pfft.

The muffled chatter of Dante’s suppressed weapon spat a steady stream of lead toward the sniper’s perch, chewing concrete and splintering wooden shutters across the street.
Beneath Alessandro’s crushing, protective weight, Sophia lay trembling against the cold steel of the running board. The smell of rain, expensive tobacco, and the sharp, sulfuric stench of burnt gunpowder filled her lungs. She could feel the violent, rapid hammering of Alessandro’s heart against her cheek—not the heartbeat of a man who was afraid, but the thunderous rhythm of a predator preparing for slaughter.
