Chapter 4 - The Shield and the Secret

The instant Daniel pivoted away from Victoria, the terrifying, murderous tension in his posture softened. The iron rigidity in his spine yielded to an aching, tender grace that only one person on earth had ever been permitted to see.
Daniel dropped to one knee upon the cold marble floor.
The fabric of his expensive black trousers pressed directly into the scattered white petals, but he didn't care. He was at eye level with his daughter. His broad, tattooed arms reached out, vast and protective, and scooped Lily’s trembling, yellow-tulle-clad frame off the floor.
"Oh, baby," Daniel murmured, his voice rough and thick with a father’s desperate love. "Come here. Come to Daddy. You're safe. I've got you. Nobody is throwing you out of anywhere."
Lily collapsed against his chest with a broken, gasping wail. She threw her small arms around the thick cord of his neck, burying her face into the crook of his collarbone, right over the ink of his lion tattoo. Her golden curls tumbled across his black lapel, her hot tears soaking instantly into the unbuttoned silk of his dress shirt. Her whole body shook with rhythmic, traumatic aftershocks, her tiny hands clutching his shoulders as if she believed that the moment she let go, the cruel blonde woman would drag her into the darkness.
Daniel wrapped his massive arms around her, one large, calloused palm cupping the back of her head, gently cradling her silver tiara so it wouldn't slip. He pressed his face into her soft hair, inhaling the innocent scent of strawberry shampoo and baby powder, murmuring soothing, unbroken promises against her temple.
"I’m right here, sweetheart," he whispered, rocking her gently as he knelt on the stone. "Daddy’s right here. This is your house. It will always be your house. Nothing changes that. Ever."
Yet even as Lily clung to his neck with all her might, Daniel noticed that her right arm was awkwardly pinned between their chests.
She had not let go of the handbag.
The tiny, quilted pink floral purse, with its tarnished brass clasp, remained welded into her small fingers. Even in the safety of her father’s embrace, Lily was guarding the purse with an instinct that went beyond childish attachment. She held it against her ribs like a soldier shielding a live grenade.
Daniel raised his head slightly, preparing to stand and carry Lily up to the safety of the private family wing.
As he shifted his gaze, his dark eyes caught sight of Victoria.
The blonde woman had not retreated to her dressing suite. She had not called for her bridesmaids or her mother. She stood frozen six feet away beside the floral pedestal, her back pressed against the wall. But she was no longer looking at Daniel’s furious face, nor was she looking at the child weeping in his arms.
Victoria’s gaze was locked, with raw, unblinking, feral intensity, directly onto the tiny pink floral purse.
Daniel’s internal alarms—the razor-sharp analytical instincts that had allowed him to build a global empire from nothing—flared into instant, cold focus.
Victoria wasn't displaying the shame of an exposed bully. She wasn't weeping over a ruined wedding. Her breathing was rapid, shallow, and completely erratic, her chest rising and falling violently against her pearl-embroidered satin bodice. Her manicured hands were hovering near her hips, fingers twitching, opening and closing in tiny, involuntary spasms. Her face had lost every drop of its remaining color, turning a sickly, translucent white beneath her high-definition bridal makeup.
She looked terrified.
Not of Daniel’s physical size. Not of his billions.

She was terrified of what was resting inside a five-year-old child’s floral handbag.
As Daniel watched, Victoria took a silent, creeping half-step forward. Her eyes were wide, dilated with an obsessive, desperate panic. Slowly, almost unconsciously, her trembling right hand began to reach out toward the purse clutched against Daniel’s chest, her fingers curling like talons.
