Chapter 2 - The Cry on the Marble Stairs

The vicious proclamation rebounded off the three-story marble walls, shattering the tranquil grandeur of the foyer into jagged shards of silence.
Lily stepped backward, her small knees buckling beneath the layered yellow tulle of her skirt. Her breath came in frantic, ragged gasps, her tiny chest heaving as if the air in the enormous room had suddenly turned to poison. A fresh flood of tears cascaded over her eyelashes, soaking into the delicate lace collar of her gown. She had never heard a human voice hold so much venom. To her five-year-old mind, the world had abruptly inverted; the warm, safe sanctuary her father had built for her was turning into a trap of dark corridors and predatory claws.
"P-Please..." Lily whimpered, her tiny voice catching in her throat as she shook her head frantically. "Please, Miss Victoria..."
"I said get out!" Victoria barked, taking another stalking stride toward the child, her white satin gown whispering menacingly against the stone. "Walk out those doors before I have the security team drag you down to the front gates by your hair!"
Suddenly, from high above the foyer floor, the heavy thud of a solid oak door closing reverberated through the hall.
Victoria froze.
Hovering halfway down the sweeping double-helix marble staircase, his hand resting on the polished wrought-iron balustrade, stood Daniel Blackwood.
At thirty-nine, Daniel was a terrifying force of nature in corporate boardrooms and backroom negotiations alike. Standing six-foot-four with broad, powerful shoulders and an athletic, muscular frame honed by years of disciplined training, he commanded every inch of space he inhabited. He wore an immaculate, bespoke three-piece black tuxedo cut from midnight-black wool, but the formal restraint of the attire was deliberately undone: his black silk dress shirt was unbuttoned several inches down his chest, exposing the corded muscles of his throat and the dark, intricate ink of a crowned lion tattoo that spread across his upper clavicle. His shirtsleeves were rolled up twice over thick, tattooed forearms, where ancient Norse geometry wrapped around steel tendons. A heavy platinum Patek Philippe watch caught the chandelier glare on his wrist. His dark brown hair, thick and wavy, was swept back from a sharp, aristocratic forehead, and his sculpted, stubble-darkened jaw was set into an expression of thunderous gravity.
He had been buttoning his cuffs on the landing when the shrill, hysterical screech of his fiancée had pierced the upper suites.
Daniel’s piercing dark eyes swept downward. In a fraction of a second, his razor-sharp mind cataloged the entire horrifying tableau: his bride-to-be, postured like an executioner in her crystal-dusted gown, towering over his only child; the empty foyer where staff had clearly been dismissed; and his tiny, fragile daughter, trembling alone on the cold marble, weeping as if her heart were being carved from her chest.
Lily looked up. The moment her huge blue eyes locked onto the towering, familiar silhouette of her father, the dam inside her broke entirely.
She reached her left hand out toward the staircase in a gesture of pure, desperate supplication, her small fingers opening and closing against empty air, while her right arm remained clamped around the tiny pink floral handbag like a vice.
"DADDY!" Lily shrieked, the sound tearing through the vaulted ceiling in an agonizing, shrill wail of heartbreak and terror. "PLEASE DON'T LET HER THROW ME OUT!"
The cry pierced Daniel’s chest like a silver bullet.
For five years, since the night his late wife had slipped away in a sterile hospital room leaving this fragile, golden-haired miracle in his arms, Daniel had sworn an unbreakable blood oath: no harm, no sorrow, and no shadow would ever touch Lily Blackwood as long as breath remained in his body.
And now, thirty minutes before his own wedding, the woman he had promised to elevate to his side was ordering his daughter into the cold like a stray animal.

A terrifying transformation swept across Daniel’s face. The cool, detached composure of the billionaire vanished, replaced by an incandescent, primal fury that darkened his features into stone. The veins along his neck and temples pulsed against his skin. His dark eyes flared with an apex predator’s lethal intent.
He did not walk down the stairs. He descended like an avalanche.
