Chapter 3 - The Wrath of a Father

Each of Daniel’s heavy, purposeful strides down the marble staircase sounded like the toll of an iron bell. The polished leather of his dress shoes struck the stone with concussive force, his muscular frame moving with fluid, terrifying speed. The fabric of his black trousers pulled taut across his thighs, and the unbuttoned collar of his shirt shifted, revealing the crowned lion tattoo that seemed to rise with the violent heave of his chest.
Victoria spun toward the sound, her hands flying to the neckline of her bridal gown. The arrogant, tyrannical sneer that had twisted her lips only seconds earlier evaporated in an instant, replaced by a sickening wash of cold dread. She had known Daniel for two years; she had seen him dismantle hedge funds, break corporate raiders, and silence political adversaries with a single, icy glance. But she had never, in all her calculations, seen the beast behind the billionaire.
"Daniel—" Victoria stammered, raising her manicured hands in a placating gesture, her voice cracking as she attempted to assemble her customary mask of sweet innocence. "Daniel, darling, you don't understand—she was being impossible, she wouldn't listen—"
Daniel cleared the final five steps in a single, thunderous leap.
He didn't slow his momentum. He surged across the checkerboard floor like a black storm cloud, his body an impenetrable wall of muscle and wrath. He moved so fast that the trailing hem of Victoria’s satin train whipped in the draft of his passage.
With a single, sweeping movement of his left arm, Daniel inserted his towering frame directly between Victoria and his weeping daughter, planting his boots wide on the marble. The physical shockwave of his presence forced Victoria to stumble backward, her heels catching on her satin skirt as she gasped, clutching the cold edge of an ivory floral pedestal to keep from falling.
Daniel leaned forward into her space, his towering height obliterating the chandelier light and casting Victoria entirely into his shadow. The veins on his forearms bulged against his dark tattoos, his hands clenching into fists that could shatter oak.
"VICTORIA!" Daniel roared.
The sheer volume of his voice was deafening. It rattled the crystal prisms of the overhead chandelier, sending an acoustic shiver racing through the vaulted corridors of the estate. Two maids hovering in the distant archway dropped their silver trays with a clattering shriek, scurrying into the shadows like frightened mice.
"STAY AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!"
Daniel’s face was inches from hers. His dark eyes were burning with a homicidal fire that stripped away every illusion Victoria held about her power in this house. The short stubble along his jawline twitched with barely contained violence, his teeth bared in a primal snarl.
Victoria recoiled as if she had been physically struck. Her back hit the marble pedestal, dislodging a cascade of white gardenia blossoms that rained down around her diamond-studded hair. Her chest heaved against her fitted corset, her breath coming in shallow, terrified gasps. The predatory queen was gone; in her place was a cornered parasite, trembling beneath the gaze of the lion she had foolishly tried to cage.
"Daniel... please," she whispered, her voice fluttering with genuine terror. "I... I was only trying to get her ready for the photos... she wouldn't cooperate..."
"You told her to get out," Daniel grated out, his voice dropping an octave into a low, vibrating baritone that sounded like grinding millstones. "You told my five-year-old child that this was your house. You told her she was nothing."
"No! No, Daniel, that's not what I meant—"
"I heard you from the landing," Daniel said, every syllable dropping like a lead weight onto the stone. "Every word. Every pathetic, venomous syllable."

He did not wait for her defense. To Daniel Blackwood, a threat to his daughter was not a domestic dispute; it was an act of war.
Dismissing Victoria as though she were a stain on his floor, Daniel turned his back on his bride-to-be.
