Chapter 6 - KNOWLEDGE IN THE SHADOWS

Evelyn pulled Adrian closer to her body, tugging on his arm until his ear was inches from her dry, cracked lips. Her movement was deliberate, calculated, as if she were terrified that Bianca might hear the truth before Adrian could process it.

She kept her eyes fixed straight on Bianca’s pale face and spoke in a low, gravelly whisper that cut through the silence of the room like a razor blade.

"She knows why I never left," Evelyn whispered softly.

Adrian went completely, utterly motionless.

The words hung in the warm, dust-mottled air of the suite like a toxic cloud. Adrian slowly turned his head, his face hardening into an expression of raw, terrifying rage as he snapped his gaze toward his sister standing near the hallway doors.

Bianca stood frozen in place, as if struck by lightning. Her hands dropped to her sides, her mouth slightly open, all the color drained from her skin.

Her eyes slowly dropped away from Adrian’s face, landing directly on the long, lace-bordered white wedding veil still lying half-tangled across the opened floor panel—as if the dark space beneath the wood was still hiding another horrifying secret that had yet to be dragged into the light.

Evelyn’s fingers tightened around Adrian’s wrist, holding him fast as the three-year-old mystery of the Vance mansion began its dark, inevitable collapse.
