Chapter 5 - THE ACCUSATION OF SILENCE

Adrian dropped to his knees beside Evelyn, wrapping his arm around her frail shoulders, his hands trembling as he tried to protect her from the cold air of the suite. He looked down at the frayed seams of her dirty wedding gown, at her bruised wrists, and at the horrific reality of her survival.

Evelyn reached up with her right hand, her thin, dirt-stained fingers gripping Adrian’s forearm with an iron, desperate intensity that betrayed the hidden reserve of strength within her fragile body.

"You were here...?" Adrian wept, his dark eyes brimming with tears as he looked into her hollow face. "You were here... under the floor... all this time?"

Evelyn did not answer him immediately. She didn't look at the room, she didn't look at Anna, and she didn't look at the sky outside the window she hadn't seen in three long years.

She kept her hollow, burning gaze locked entirely on Bianca.

Bianca began completely losing her composure. She pressed her hands against her cream-colored dress, her chest heaving as sweat broke out along her forehead. She took another unsteady step backward toward the grand staircase outside the suite door, her eyes darting frantically toward the floorboards.

"She's lying! She's trying to frame us!" Bianca screamed softly, her voice cracking under the weight of her unraveling narrative.
