Adrian immediately reached down into the dark cavity with both arms, his large hands carefully grasping Evelyn’s thin, dust-covered waist and shoulders. He pulled her upward, helping her lift her frail body out from the tight confines of the hidden floor space.
Evelyn collapsed onto the polished oak floorboards, her lungs expanding in deep, ragged gasps as she breathed in the fresh, open air of the room. She held her chest, her thin arms shaking violently inside the shredded sleeves of her ruined silk dress.

"She ran away!" Bianca yelled, her voice high-pitched, hysterical, and laced with panic. "Adrian, don't touch her! She's crazy! She ran away three years ago! She must have broken back into the house!"
