Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The silence inside the Mercer dining room was no longer the silence of tension; it was the quiet that follows a devastating explosion.

Adrian managed to stand up, using the edge of the dark oak table for support. His white shirt was soaked through with dark red wine, making it look as though he had suffered a deep, mortal wound across his chest. He was trembling violently, his knees weak, clutching his bruised ribs with one hand while reaching out toward his father with the other.

"Father..." Adrian stammered, his voice pathetic and high-pitched. "Father, what is she talking about? What camera? What did she do?"

Victor did not answer his son. He couldn't. His entire mind was racing through the legal and financial ramifications of what had just transpired.

As the head of Mercer Global Logistics, Victor knew that he was already under quiet scrutiny by federal regulators regarding foreign port transactions. He had managed to keep the government at bay using teams of high-priced defense attorneys, non-disclosure agreements, and immense political influence. But a recorded, clear-cut video of felony assault, corporate extortion, and physical violence inside his own home, handled by an officer of the court who was now officially a victim and key witness—it was an unmitigated disaster.

There was no lawyer in the country who could bury that footage. There was no judge who could dismiss it. The corporate board of directors would vote to remove him before the market opened the following morning to protect the company's stock price.

"Claire..." Victor said, taking a slow, cautious step forward, his voice completely changing tone. The rage was gone, replaced by a desperate, sickening attempt at negotiation. "Claire, let's... let's talk about this as a family. We are a family now. You are a Mercer."

Claire let out a short, soft laugh—a cold, melodic sound that cut through Victor's pathetic plea like a razor blade.

"A family?" Claire asked, her tone dripping with quiet contempt. "Three days ago, you thought you bought a compliant ornament for your son's arm. You thought you were adding another asset to your portfolio that you could intimidate, control, and silence whenever it suited you."

She took a step toward Victor, forcing the towering old man to instinctively take a step back.

"You didn't marry a victim, Victor," Claire continued, her voice steady, powerful, and utterly commanding. "You invited a federal auditor into your vault. And you just gave me everything I needed on a silver platter."

Adrian gasped, his eyes wide with horror as the truth hit him. "You... you used us? The wedding... the prenuptials..."

"I didn't use you, Adrian," Claire said, turning her head slightly to look at her husband with pure disgust. "You revealed yourselves. I simply gave you the rope, and you willingly hung yourselves with it."

Adrian stumbled backward, his back hitting the glass wine cabinet. The heavy glass doors rattled behind him, mirroring his internal terror. He looked at Claire as if she were a ghost, a stranger he had never truly known. The handsome, wealthy prince of Los Angeles had been exposed as nothing more than a weak, violent pawn in his father's corrupt machine.

Victor’s hands shook as he reached into his jacket pocket, likely searching for his own phone to call his chief legal officer, but his fingers were so unsteady he could barely grip the device.

"It won't hold up," Victor lied, his voice cracking as he tried to construct a defense on the spot. "It's private property! Illegal recording! I'll have my team throw it out of court before sunset tomorrow!"

"It's a state-of-the-art security system installed by your own corporate security firm, Victor," Claire replied calmly, raising her phone slightly. "It operates under continuous consent protocols for estate monitoring. And as a resident of this house—your son's lawful wife—my legal standing to access and transmit evidence of a crime committed against my person is absolute. You built this digital cage yourself. I just closed the door."
