Chapter 8 - The Footsteps on the Stairs

Upstairs in the quiet bedroom, the air was warm, peaceful, and still.

Sophia was fast asleep, her breathing deep and even, her pale face relaxed for the first time in months. Her small hand had finally released its grip on Emma’s thumb, resting gently over the soft fur of her stuffed rabbit.

Emma sat in the wooden chair, staring down at the sleeping child. Her own mind was spinning in a chaotic storm of confusion and wonder.

She reached out with a light, gentle touch, pulling the comforter up to Sophia’s chin. Then, standing up slowly so as not to creak the floorboards, Emma stepped toward the nightstand. She looked at the small butterfly book, then down at her own tote bag resting on the chair near the door.

She felt an unexplainable weight in her chest. Growing up in East Boston, raised by her elderly Italian grandmother, Emma had always believed the lullaby was just a sweet, family heirloom—a silly old song passed down through generations of poor immigrants from the old country. Her grandmother had been fierce about privacy, rarely talking about her life before arriving in America, taking her secrets to the grave three years ago.

Why did Sophia know those words? Emma thought, her brow furrowing in deep concentration. How could a six-year-old girl in a fortified wealth-estate know a forgotten dialect from a mountain village thousands of miles away?

Suddenly, the absolute quiet of the second-floor hallway was broken.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Heavy, fast, and deliberate footsteps echoed down the carpeted corridor. They were not the quiet, polite steps of the house manager or the soft rubber soles of the nurses. These were the heavy, forceful steps of a man moving with intense, unstoppable purpose.

Emma turned toward the heavy double doors, her heart instantly picking up speed.

Before she could step away from the bed, the brass door handles clicked sharply. The left double door was pushed open with sudden force, slamming softly against the interior wall stop.

Standing in the doorway was Logan Parker.

He was stripped of his suit jacket, his dark silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair slightly disheveled. Behind him in the hallway, Vincent and Marcus stood like dark sentinels in the warm corridor light.

Logan’s presence filled the entire doorway. His face was pale, his jaw set, his dark eyes locked onto Emma with an intensity that felt almost physical.

Emma stood her ground near the nightstand, her posture straight, her brown eyes meeting his dangerous gaze. She didn't retreat, but her hand instinctively hovered near her chest.

Logan took two slow, heavy steps into his daughter's bedroom. He didn't look at Sophia sleeping peacefully in the bed. He didn't look at the butterfly book or the IV stand. His dark, burning eyes were fixed entirely on Emma Foster.
