Chapter 6 - The Shattered Glass

Downstairs in the private security room, the air was cold and dead silent.
Logan Parker stood before the central monitor bank, his face illuminated by the blue light of the screens. Beside the main monitor, the real-time audio visualizer was active, displaying delicate green audio waves captured by the high-sensitivity hidden microphone built into the bedside lamp in Sophia’s room.
When Emma had first begun humming the low melody, Logan had been leaning against the console desk, staring tiredly at the floor.
Then the audio system amplified the ancient, melancholic notes of the Italian lullaby through the room's high-fidelity speakers.
The instant the melody struck the room, Logan went stiff as iron.
His body reacted with violent, instinctual shock. He abruptly stood straight up, his knee slamming hard against the heavy edge of the wooden console table.
His leather executive chair slid backward on its casters, crashing loudly into the server rack behind him.
His face drained of every trace of color. The powerful, commanding patriarch of the Parker empire looked as if he had just seen a ghost rise directly through the floorboards.
Logan stumbled forward two steps, coming within inches of the main screen. He reached out with a trembling hand and grabbed the master audio dial on the console desk, twisting it violently to the right.
The high-definition speakers filled the security room with the crystal-clear audio from the bedroom upstairs.
On the screen, Emma Foster had paused in shock, staring down at Sophia. Then, trembling slightly, Emma softy began to sing the melody again, putting quiet, whisper-soft words to the Italian dialect:
"...Dormi, o fiore de lu monte, la luna se n'è iuta oltre lu ponte..."
Logan stared at the monitor, his breathing shallow, heavy, and ragged. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. His dark eyes were wide, dilated with a mixture of profound shock, rising terror, and overwhelming emotional agony.
"Where..." Logan’s voice cracked—a sound Marcus had never heard from the man in fifteen years of service. "Where did she learn that?"
Standing ten feet behind Logan near the security doorway, Vincent had been holding a leather-bound house ledger.
The moment the words of the lullaby floated through the security speakers, the old house manager froze completely. The ledger slipped from his fingers, hitting the floorboards with a dull, heavy thud.
Vincent’s gray face was entirely pale. His hand slowly rose to his mouth, his eyes wide with an absolute, terrifying recognition.
Logan slowly, rigidly turned his head around to face the old man.
The blue light of the monitors caught the sheer, raw panic in Logan's eyes as he stared at his house manager.

Vincent did not speak. He didn't offer an excuse, a defense, or an explanation. His stunned, horrified expression made one thing indisputably clear: he recognized the ancient lullaby instantly. He knew exactly what those words meant, where they came from, and whose voice was supposed to sing them.
Neither man said another word. The only sound in the dark room was the soft, haunting voice of Emma Foster singing through the monitor, echoing off the cold steel of the servers.
