Chapter 2 - THE BULL IN THE AISLE

At six-foot-four and two hundred and sixty pounds, thirty-nine-year-old Tommy Richardson was an intimidating physical presence. His head was completely shaved, revealing thick scars across his scalp, and his jaw was framed by a dense, manicured beard. Extensive dark tattoos covered his neck, climbing up his throat and disappearing into his ears. His olive uniform sleeves were rolled up tightly past his biceps, displaying thick forearms covered in ink depicting barbed wire, brass knuckles, and predatory birds.

Tommy stood with his feet planted wide, holding a heavy metal tray in one hand. Behind him, three of his usual enforcers hovered like shadows, grinning with cruel anticipation.

Samuel stopped two paces short of the giant. He did not lower his eyes, nor did he raise his head in defiance. His face remained an unreadable mask of absolute tranquility.

"Somebody’s grandpa got lost," Tommy said, his gravelly voice cutting cleanly through the surrounding noise.

The immediate cluster of inmates at the nearby tables stopped eating. The silence began to spread outward in a ripple effect, table by table, as prisoners recognized the setup for a morning beating.

Samuel did not react. He did not blink.

Instead of engaging, Samuel simply tilted his balance slightly to the right, taking a smooth, economical step to walk around Tommy’s massive frame.

Tommy reacted instantly, sliding his right boot across the slippery floor to block the path again, his broad shoulder nearly brushing against Samuel’s chest.

"I’m talking to you," Tommy sneered, leaning down so his face was mere inches from the older man.

Samuel looked up calmly into Tommy’s dark, aggressive eyes.

"I heard you," Samuel replied softly.

"Then answer," Tommy demanded, his jaw tightening as his enforcers chuckled behind him.

"I have nothing to say," Samuel said flatly.

Several inmates at a nearby table exchanged shocked, wide-eyed looks. In Oakridge, dismissive quietness from an old man to a block leader was considered far more offensive than an outright curse word.

Tommy’s face twisted. The arrogance of the old inmate was insulting his authority in front of two hundred witnesses.

Without warning, Tommy threw a heavy, flat-palmed shove directly into the center of Samuel’s chest.
