Chapter 10 - THE UNANSWERED SHADOW

The morning breakfast period was officially ended by the loud, mechanical chime of the central shift horn echoing through the cafeteria ceiling speakers.
BZZZZZZT.
"All units, clear the floor! Prepare for morning headcount!" an officer shouted over the PA system.
Inmates began standing up in disciplined rows, stacking their metal trays onto the rolling industrial carts near the exits. The chaotic noise of moving chairs and rustling uniforms resumed, but the atmosphere in the room had permanently altered.
Every prisoner who walked past Samuel’s table gave the old man a wide berth of at least three feet. Nobody looked him in the eye; nobody whispered insults. The quiet old man in Cell 114 had become an unknown variable—a sleeping leviathan that no one wanted to wake.
Samuel stood up smoothly from the stainless-steel bench. He picked up his clean metal tray, placed his paperback book firmly back under his arm, and walked toward the tray return line with his calm, unhurried stride.
Marcus walked closely beside him, no longer looking at the floor, but keeping his eyes wide open, feeling an odd mixture of intense fear and profound security in his cellmate's presence.
As Samuel placed his tray onto the rolling cart, he walked past Officer Miller, who was standing beside the main exit doors.
The two men passed within inches of each other.
Miller did not move to stop him, but as Samuel passed, Miller spoke in a low, quiet voice that only Samuel could hear:
"The school at Fort Meade was closed in '92, Carter. They said everyone from that group was retired or buried."
Samuel did not stop walking. He didn't turn his head. His expression remained completely serene, his eyes fixed on the long concrete corridor leading back to Cell Block C.
"People say many things, Sergeant," Samuel replied softly, his voice fading into the general noise of the hall as he stepped through the heavy steel threshold. "Most of them are wrong."

Miller watched the lean, gray-haired figure vanish into the dense crowd of olive uniforms, his hand trembling slightly against his belt.
The cafeteria emptied slowly, leaving behind only the cold stainless-steel tables, the blinking surveillance cameras, and the heavy, unwritten mystery of a man whose past was far more dangerous than the maximum-security walls built to hold him.
