Chapter 4 - Absence Teaches Too
Emma thanked Mrs. Alvarez for keeping snacks in her desk.
She thanked Mr. Coleman for leaving the library lights on after closing so she could finish scholarship applications.
She thanked Nina for filming debate tournaments when nobody else came.
Then she looked toward the reserved seats.
“And I want to thank the people who didn’t show up.”
Phones began rising across the stadium.
“Because absence teaches too. It teaches you that applause can come from strangers before it comes from home. It teaches you not to shrink just because the people who should love you loudly choose silence.”
Emma’s voice remained steady.
She did not name her parents.
She did not mention Tyler.
That made the speech more powerful.
Everyone who had felt ignored could place their own empty seats behind her.
By the time she finished, teachers were standing.
Students rose next.
Then the bleachers.
Nina uploaded a short clip before Emma returned to her seat.
Within twenty minutes, it passed fifty thousand views.
By nine o’clock, it had reached millions.
But Emma did not know that yet.
At the edge of the stage, a tall older man waited with a bouquet of white roses.
She recognized him immediately.
