Chapter 3 - The Empty Seats

Lakeside High’s football stadium was filled with families carrying flowers, balloons, and homemade signs.

Emma sat in the first row among the honor students.

Behind them, a reserved section displayed a white sign.

FAMILIES OF HONOR STUDENTS.

Two seats beneath Emma’s name remained empty.

Her best friend Nina arrived carrying a small bouquet from the grocery store. Nina’s mother took photographs and hugged Emma before returning to the bleachers.

Mrs. Alvarez, Emma’s English teacher, slipped a granola bar into her hand.

“You skipped lunch again.”

Emma smiled.

“I was nervous.”

“You were studying.”

Mr. Coleman, the school librarian, adjusted the graduation cord around her neck.

“You earned every thread of this.”

Those were the people who noticed.

Not because Emma was trending.

Not because anyone important had appeared.

They noticed while she was still just a tired student standing beside two empty seats.

When Principal Harris announced her name, the applause began politely.

“Emma Whitaker, valedictorian.”

She walked toward the podium with two versions of her speech.

The first was safe.

It thanked teachers, parents, and the school community in the expected order.

The second had been written at two in the morning after Robert called academic awards participation trophies.

Emma unfolded the second speech.

“My name is Emma Whitaker,” she began, “and tonight, I want to thank the people who showed up.”

The field became still.
