Chapter 1 - The People Who Showed Up
At 11:07 p.m., Robert Whitaker stood in the middle of his living room pointing at the television.
“Wait… is that Daniel Pierce?”
His wife, Karen, slowly lowered both hands from her face.
“He’s standing with Emma.”
Their seventeen-year-old son, Tyler, remained near the sofa in his red basketball jersey, one ankle wrapped in ice after his team lost the semifinal.
On the screen, Emma stood beneath the stadium lights in a blue graduation gown. Thousands of people were applauding as a silver-haired man in a charcoal suit waited beside her with white roses.
Robert stepped closer.
“Why would he know our daughter?”
Then Emma’s recorded voice filled the room.
“Tonight, I want to thank the people who showed up.”
Nobody in the Whitaker house moved.
Robert had called the graduation a loser’s parade that morning.
Karen had chosen Tyler’s basketball game because scouts might attend.
Tyler had told Emma that basketball actually mattered.
Now their daughter’s speech was the most viewed video in the country, and one of the most influential businessmen in America stood beside her like he had every right to be proud.
