Chapter 6 - Why He Needed the House

The investigation uncovered more than a forged ownership document.

Dad had promised Emily that my house would secure part of her wedding financing.

The venue deposit, catering balance, and honeymoon package exceeded what my parents could afford.

Dad applied for a private loan using a draft agreement showing he owned a quarter of my property.

The lender requested proof of access and updated photographs before releasing the money.

That was why he became desperate after the locks changed.

He needed to enter my home, photograph the rooms, and retrieve mail that might help support the false claim.

Emily knew Dad planned to use “family property” as collateral.

She claimed she believed he meant his own house.

Text messages told a different story.

When Dad wrote that I was becoming difficult, Emily replied:

Remind her who helped her buy it. She always gives in eventually.

Mom knew about the loan application too.

She called after Dad was questioned.

“You’re really going to destroy your father over paperwork?”

“He forged my signature.”

“He was trying to save your sister’s wedding.”

“That does not make it legal.”

“You could just give them the money and make this disappear.”

The request was so familiar that it finally sounded absurd.

They still believed my money was the solution to what they had done with my name.

I refused.

The lender canceled the application.

The wedding venue demanded payment.

Emily reduced the guest list, canceled the luxury honeymoon, and held a smaller ceremony she could actually afford.

The wedding still happened.

My eight thousand dollars had never been necessary.

Only convenient.
