Chapter 1 - The Officers at My Door

My father’s voice exploded through the speaker while two sheriff’s officers stood in my entryway.
“Tell them I have every right to enter that house!”
I stood beside the console table with a folder pressed against my ribs. My husband, Ryan, remained at my side without speaking over me.
Afternoon light stretched across the framed photograph behind us.
In it, I stood alone on the basic training graduation field.
No mother beside me.
No father.
No sister.
Officer Daniels glanced from the phone to the deed in his hands.
My father continued shouting.
“I helped her buy that place. She cannot lock her own family out!”
I looked at the graduation picture.
Three weeks earlier, I had searched the bleachers until the crowd began leaving. I kept expecting to see someone familiar waving from the rows.
Nobody came.
Then Dad contacted me for the first time after graduation and demanded eight thousand dollars for my sister Emily’s wedding.
I sent him eight dollars.
The note said:
Best wishes.
Then I asked Ryan to change the locks.
Now my father had brought law enforcement to my home, hoping uniforms would frighten me more than he ever could.
I handed Officer Daniels the repayment records.
“No, Dad. You lost that right when you tried to buy your way back in.”
Daniels read the mortgage documents and bank statements.
Then he looked toward the phone.
“Sir, the documents show this is her property.”
The shouting stopped.
I looked at the photograph again.
“And this time, I’m not paying to be ignored.”
May you like
The line went silent.
But the officers had not yet seen the document that explained why my father was suddenly so desperate to get inside.
