Chapter 4 - The Loan He Never Forgave

Four years earlier, Dad gave me fifteen thousand dollars toward the down payment.

He called it a gift in front of the lender because my mortgage approval depended on the money not being a private loan.

After closing, he changed the story.

He began describing himself as an investor.

Whenever I disagreed with him, he reminded me that he had “put me in that house.”

I repaid every dollar anyway.

Not because a legal debt existed.

Because I wanted nothing hanging over me.

Each transfer carried a memo.

Down-payment repayment.

Dad accepted all fifteen payments.

He never returned the money.

He never objected to the wording.

When the final balance was paid, I sent a message confirming the account was settled.

He replied with a thumbs-up.

But he continued using the original contribution as emotional ownership.

He kept an old key.

Let himself inside when I was away.

Stored boxes in my garage without asking.

Once, I came home and found Emily selecting furniture from my guest room because Dad told her she could have it after her wedding.

When I demanded the key, he said I was becoming selfish.

Ryan replaced the lock temporarily, but I gave Dad another key after Mom cried and said I was dividing the family.

After his wedding-money demand, I finally stopped negotiating.

The new locks were installed the next morning.

Dad discovered the change when he arrived while we were both out.

Our security camera recorded him trying the door, walking around the house, and peering through the rear windows.

He left three angry voicemails.

Then he filed a police complaint.
