Chapter 5 - The Capsule
Talon Team stabilized Evelyn beneath the tree roots.
While treating her wound, their medic found the waterproof capsule sewn inside her jacket.
Hayes expected stolen intelligence.
Instead, it contained encrypted copies of flight orders, redirected rescue requests, internal communications, and payments routed through shell contractors.
One recording featured Malcolm Kane speaking to an unidentified man.
Cross has the ledger. If the weather does not finish her, Blackglass will.
Hayes listened twice.
Kane had signed Talon Team’s mission order.
He had also issued the directive that sent the rescue helicopter away.
The supposed evidence against Evelyn had been manufactured using operations she conducted under approved cover identities. Payments described as bribes were intelligence funds. Messages had been altered to remove the agency responses authorizing them.
The fifteen operators died because Kane supplied their deployment routes to Blackglass.
Evelyn had uncovered the connection while embedded in the weapons network.
Kane branded her a traitor before she could return.
Hayes felt physically sick.
He had almost completed the real traitor’s final order.
Walker looked toward Evelyn.
“She knew we weren’t rescue.”
“How?”
“She recognized our approach formation.”
Hayes glanced at his mission packet.
“She still warned us.”
“She warned soldiers who came to arrest her.”
That was the detail no forged document could explain.
