Chapter 2 - The Helicopter That Turned Away
Six hours earlier, Evelyn had watched a rescue helicopter hover directly above her position.
Its searchlight illuminated the word she had carved into the snow.
FRIENDLY.
A crew member stood in the open side door and looked down at her.
There was enough time to lower a cable.
Enough time to pull her from the ravine.
Instead, the aircraft banked south and disappeared into the storm.
Evelyn understood immediately.
The crew had not failed to identify her.
Someone had ordered them to leave.
She had been shot during an extraction operation after spending nineteen months inside a weapons network connected to Blackglass. Her mission was to identify the government official feeding him American routes, frequencies, and personnel lists.
She found the answer three days earlier.
Before she could transmit it, fifteen operators died in coordinated attacks.
Then Evelyn’s own name appeared in a classified alert accusing her of selling the information.
Every friendly radio frequency became dangerous.
Every planned escape route was compromised.
The person controlling Blackglass also controlled the information reaching American units.
Evelyn destroyed her radio, satellite phone, and tracking devices.
She kept only the rifle, nine rounds, and a waterproof data capsule sewn inside her jacket.
That capsule contained the real reason the helicopter left.
