Chapter 1 - The Shot Nobody Believed

Captain Hayes stepped through the blizzard with five Talon Team soldiers behind him.

“Evelyn Cross, drop the rifle!”

Evelyn remained slumped against a frozen boulder, one hand pressed to the field dressing beneath her left ribs. Blood darkened her white winter uniform, but her eyes stayed fixed beyond the soldiers.

Toward the northern ridge.

“If you cross that open ground, Blackglass kills you.”

Hayes raised his weapon slightly.

“You are under arrest for treason and the deaths of fifteen American operators.”

A rifle cracked through the mountains.

The surveillance drone above Talon Team burst into sparks and dropped through the snow.

Every soldier dove behind cover.

Sergeant Walker crawled toward Evelyn, his silver hair visible beneath his winter hood. He studied the angle of the falling wreckage, then the distant ridge.

“Can you stop him?”

Evelyn dragged open the broken rifle case.

“Three thousand five hundred forty meters.”

Hayes stared at her.

“That shot is impossible.”

Evelyn forced the precision rifle into position despite the pain tearing through her side.

“So is surviving betrayal.”

She settled behind the scope.

The wind shifted.

Her breathing slowed.

Then the rifle thundered across the ravine.

No one saw a body fall.

May you like

They only saw the distant muzzle flash disappear.

And for the first time in seventy-two hours, Blackglass did not fire again.
