Chapter 6 - The Laughter Turned Into Shame

The recipient’s name was Rebecca Lang.
She had spent four years waiting for a transplant.
Sophie’s heart reached her hours before doctors believed she would become too weak for surgery.
Rebecca had traveled from Spokane for graduation.
Liam had spent weeks coordinating with Sophie’s mother, the school principal, the transplant foundation, and Rebecca’s family.
That was why he disappeared after class.
That was why his phone remained locked.
They were preparing a memorial scholarship in Sophie’s name.
Liam had asked to wear the dress during his speech.
The school board initially refused.
They called it distracting.
Inappropriate.
Too controversial for a formal ceremony.
The principal approved it only after Sophie’s mother threatened to speak publicly about the decision.
Now he stood near the stage stairs looking ashamed.
Liam turned toward the students behind him.
“I understand why some of you laughed.”
Nobody met his eyes.
“You saw something different and decided it had to be funny before you asked what it meant.”
The words were not angry.
That made them heavier.
“I almost refused to wear it because I knew this would happen.”
He looked toward Sophie’s mother.
“But she walked into school every day wearing whatever made her feel alive. She never asked permission to be remembered.”
A boy who had shouted earlier slowly stood.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Liam nodded once.
Then another student stood.
Then another.
Not applause.
Not yet.
Just recognition.

The room had spent thirty seconds turning Liam into a joke.
Now every person inside it had to sit with what that laughter revealed about them.
