Chapter 5 - The Person Who Saved Me

The auditorium remained silent as Liam spoke.
“Sophie Mercer was supposed to graduate tonight.”
Several students behind him lowered their eyes.
They knew the name.
Her photograph had remained inside the school memorial case all semester.
“She bought this dress in September,” Liam continued. “She said red was too loud for people who were afraid of being remembered.”
A few parents turned toward one another.
The principal looked down.
Liam’s fingers tightened around the microphone.
“On January seventeenth, Sophie pushed me out of the path of a van.”
His voice broke.
The room seemed to lean toward him.
“She died two days later.”
I heard someone gasp.
Liam touched the fabric again.
“This was supposed to be her graduation dress.”
The students who had laughed now sat motionless.
One girl removed her cap and held it in her lap.
Liam looked toward the empty chair placed near the edge of the stage.
I had assumed it was for an absent teacher.
It was Sophie’s seat.
“I told her I would make sure she graduated.”
The principal covered his mouth.
My son stood at the microphone wearing the promise he had been carrying alone for five months.
Then he revealed the part even I did not know.
“Sophie didn’t only save me that night.”
He rested one hand against the center of his chest.
“Her heart saved someone else too.”
Sophie’s mother stood from the back row.

Beside her was a woman in her forties pressing both hands over her mouth.
She was the recipient of Sophie’s heart.
