Chapter 1 - I Know Why You’re Laughing

The laughter began before Liam reached the microphone.

He stepped onto the graduation stage wearing a bright red satin ball gown beneath the white glare of the auditorium lights.

The full skirt moved around his ankles as he crossed the polished floor.

Behind him, rows of seniors in black graduation gowns leaned toward one another.

Some covered their mouths.

Others did not bother.

“Is he seriously wearing that?” someone shouted.

The laughter grew louder.

I sat in the third row with one hand pressed against my mouth.

My first instinct was to run to him.

To cover him.

To pull him away before the room could turn his courage into a weapon against him.

Then Liam found my face in the audience.

He gave me the smallest shake of his head.

Stay.

His hands trembled when he reached the microphone.

The principal took one uncertain step toward him.

Liam raised his palm.

Not dramatically.

Just firmly enough to stop him.

Then my son drew one long breath.

“I know why you’re laughing.”

The room did not become silent immediately.

A few students still whispered.

Liam looked down and touched the red satin near his waist.

“But this dress isn’t a joke.”

The laughter faded.

His eyes returned to mine.

They were shining, but he did not look away.

“It belonged to the person who saved me.”

Something inside me dropped.

May you like

Because three months earlier, I had found that same red dress hidden inside a garment bag beneath Liam’s bed.

And I had been too frightened to ask whose it was.
