Chapter 7 - The Silver Rattle

I did not take my grandson away from his parents.

I did not seek revenge through custody threats.

The baby had done nothing wrong.

I established a protected trust for him that neither Daniel nor Vanessa could access directly.

Education.

Medical care.

Housing support under independent supervision.

No luxury withdrawals.

No loans.

No using a child’s future to repair his parents’ mistakes.

Daniel visited me three months later.

He arrived alone.

For the first time in years, he wore no expensive watch.

He sat across from me at the same kitchen table where he once completed scholarship applications.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For the hospital?”

“For all of it.”

I waited.

He looked down.

“I liked people believing I took care of you.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth made me feel like I still depended on you.”

“You did.”

May you like

“I know.”

That was the first honest thing he had said in a long time.
