Chapter 1 - Don’t Take What Belongs to Me

The first thing my daughter-in-law did after giving birth was call me filthy.
The second was shove past me while my only son watched.
I stood inside the private maternity suite carrying a hand-knitted blue blanket and a floral tote filled with fruit.
My grandson slept safely against Vanessa’s chest, wrapped in a white hospital blanket with pastel stripes.
“Let me see him,” I whispered.
Vanessa recoiled as though I had walked in carrying disease.
“Stay back, you filthy old woman.”
Her voice cut through the warm room.
My hands stopped in front of me.
Daniel stood near the window in a navy sweater, arms folded.
He did not correct her.
He did not even look embarrassed.
Vanessa brushed past me with one shoulder while keeping the newborn secured against her chest. I stepped backward, lost my balance, and dropped the tote.
Oranges rolled across the polished floor.
The nurse hurried toward me as I landed seated beside the hospital bed.
I looked at Daniel.
For one second, I waited for the son I raised to move.
He remained where he was.
“Mom,” he said flatly, “maybe you should go.”
Something inside me broke.
But it did not make a sound.
I picked up one orange and wiped it against my cardigan sleeve.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Then don’t take what belongs to me.”
She laughed softly.
“What, your pension?”
Daniel finally uncrossed his arms.
“What does that mean?”
I reached into my pocket and removed my phone.
One authorization.
One command.
The protection clauses activated.
“You’ll understand by morning.”
The nurse helped me stand.

I left the fruit scattered across the floor.
Behind me, Daniel’s confidence began to crack before he even knew what I had done.
