Chapter 5 - By Morning

At 6:04 the next morning, Daniel’s corporate card stopped working at the hospital pharmacy.

At 6:17, the penthouse building manager called to confirm that its occupancy agreement had entered legal review.

At 6:32, Cole Meridian’s board received notice that Daniel’s voting proxy and spending authority were suspended pending investigation.

At 6:45, the bank froze the attempted share transfer.

Daniel called me before seven.

“What did you do?”

I sat at my kitchen table drinking coffee.

“I protected my property.”

“You froze the company.”

“No. I froze your access.”

“People will panic.”

“They will read the audit notice.”

Vanessa’s voice rose in the background.

“She can’t do this. That apartment is ours.”

“The penthouse belongs to Margaret Cole Holdings.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Mom, please don’t make this emotional.”

I almost laughed.

He had allowed his wife to shove me onto a hospital floor, then called my response emotional.

“You forged my authorization.”

“It was administrative.”

“You tried to transfer controlling shares.”

“For estate planning.”

“Whose estate?”

Silence.

Then Daniel said the sentence that ended any remaining doubt.

“You were going to leave it to me anyway.”

He believed inheritance was ownership delayed by my continued existence.

That was not love.

It was expectation wearing the face of family.
