Chapter 4 - CLAIRE'S PART

Hospital administration removed Daniel from Walter's room for the afternoon.

Not permanently.

He had grabbed a nurse.

Attempted to take patient property.

Continued advancing after being told to stop.

The slap complicated things.

Claire knew that.

She filed her incident report before anybody asked.

She wrote:

Mr. Hayes advanced toward me while attempting to take sealed patient property. I struck him with an open hand after verbal instructions failed. Security had not yet arrived.

Then she added:

I should have disengaged sooner and called security when he first grabbed my arm.

Her supervisor read it.

“You're volunteering that?”

“It happened.”

“Okay.”

Daniel filed his own report.

He admitted grabbing her.

Said the slap was excessive.

Hospital security would review both.

No instant hero/villain result.

Then Claire corrected something more uncomfortable.

Walter's contact restriction.

Daniel had provided Walter's healthcare proxy at admission.

The document was valid for medical decisions only while Walter lacked capacity.

It did not make Daniel owner of his father's visitors.

Yet Daniel had told Claire:

“My father doesn't want anyone except family.”

Walter had been sedated.

Claire marked:

FAMILY-ONLY CONTACT REQUESTED BY POA

Standard enough.

Wrong enough.

Eleanor arrived unidentified and remained separate because nobody knew she was connected to Walter.

When she later asked to see him, another nurse saw the restriction and delayed access.

Claire had not intended to separate them.

Her shortcut helped.

She corrected the note.

Prior visitor restriction was based on surrogate report and not confirmed by patient. Patient now capable of stating preferences.

Walter requested:

Eleanor allowed.

Reed allowed.

Daniel allowed only if calm and security available.

Walter did not exclude his son.

That mattered.

Then Claire checked the accident property chain.

The bracelet had not actually been found inside Walter's box.

State police photographed it on Eleanor's wrist.

At the emergency department, it was cut off because her hand was swelling.

A property technician accidentally placed the sealed bracelet bag inside Walter's wooden box after the two crash files were linked that morning.

An ordinary chain-of-custody mistake.

No one stole Grace's jewelry from a grave.

No secret item hidden in Walter's car.

The bracelet had been Eleanor's possession.

Claire brought the corrected report to Walter.

He read slowly.

“Daniel thought it was Grace's.”

“Yes.”

“It was.”

“Eleanor says it was hers first.”

Walter nodded.

“Their mother gave it to Eleanor.”

“Then Grace had it.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Walter looked toward the closed curtain.

Eleanor was sleeping.

Or pretending.

“She gave it to Grace when Daniel was born.”

Claire stopped.

The sentence landed wrong.

Not enough information.

Too much implication.

“Why would she do that?”

Walter looked at her.

“You're my nurse.”

“Yes.”

“You don't have to solve my family.”

“No.”

He was right.

Claire set the chart down.

Then Walter added:

“Grace gave it back eight years ago.”

One year after Grace died?

Claire frowned.

“Grace died nine years ago.”

Walter looked at her.

His eyes sharpened.

“Seven months before she died.”

There.

Claire had misheard the sequence.

“How long had she been seeing Eleanor?”

Walter did not answer.

Behind the curtain, Eleanor did.

“Fourteen years.”

Walter turned.

Eleanor's voice remained calm.

“Grace and I found each other again fourteen years before she died.”

Claire looked at Walter.

Daniel believed Eleanor had disappeared from the family.

Walter had allowed him to believe Grace never even had a sister.

That was no longer a single old secret.

May you like

It was an active one.

Maintained for years.
