Chapter 11 - THE LETTERS THAT NEVER REACHED HIM

The 1991 envelope was there.

Harold Reed found it himself.

He did not open it at home.

He delivered it sealed to Eleanor's new attorney, Naomi Brooks.

Everyone agreed copies could be reviewed together.

The contents answered one question.

Then created a worse one.

Eleanor had contacted Samuel Reed in April 1991.

She had stable employment.

An apartment.

Three years sober from alcohol.

That was new information.

Daniel looked at her.

“You drank?”

“Yes.”

“After the adoption?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

Eleanor did not soften it.

“Bad enough that keeping you with Grace was the right decision then.”

Walter looked at her.

She continued.

“Not forever.”

Important distinction.

Eleanor asked Samuel Reed whether she could see Daniel once.

Not reclaim custody.

Not reopen adoption.

Meet.

Samuel contacted Grace.

Grace refused.

Then changed her mind.

The next letter:

One supervised public meeting. Daniel not to be informed of biological relationship unless mutually agreed afterward.

Location:

Port Authority bus terminal, Manhattan.

June 15, 1991.

Daniel was five.

Eleanor arrived.

She remembered seeing Walter.

Walter insisted he had never been there.

Then the file produced a note in Samuel Reed's handwriting.

W.H. requested cancellation 06/14. G.H. unaware. Says Daniel becoming attached/confused after recent questions.

Walter stared.

Daniel read it again.

“W.H.”

Walter Hayes.

“You canceled it.”

Walter looked lost.

“I don't remember this.”

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“You remember enough to lie for two days.”

Walter's face tightened.

“I remembered Grace talking about a meeting. I did not remember making the call.”

Daniel snapped:

“You don't forget canceling someone's meeting with their child.”

Walter turned.

“Forty years contains things you think you'll never forget.”

Reed interrupted.

“Thirty-five.”

Nobody appreciated the correction.

He stopped.

Then Naomi Brooks continued through the record.

Samuel called Eleanor the day before.

Told her the meeting was canceled because Daniel had become ill.

Eleanor believed him.

She came to New York anyway.

Why?

She had already bought the ticket.

She wanted to give Grace the bracelet.

The same bracelet.

She waited at Port Authority.

Then saw Walter.

Or believed she did.

She approached a man from behind.

He turned.

Not Walter.

Eleanor had been wrong.

That much she now remembered clearly enough.

“I saw the coat.”

she said.

“Same kind Walter wore.”

Walter closed his eyes.

“So I wasn't there.”

“Maybe not.”

Then another note.

Eleanor called Samuel after waiting three hours.

Angry.

Samuel recorded:

E.B. says she saw child briefly from distance with adult female, blue coat. Did not approach.

Daniel went still.

“You were there.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I saw you.”

“With who?”

“I thought Grace.”

Grace had been home in Westchester according to family calendar.

So who had Daniel at Port Authority?

Walter looked genuinely confused now.

Daniel looked at the file.

Then the final item.

A transit photograph receipt.

No photograph.

Just notation:

Photo copy retained by G.H.

Grace had apparently received—or taken—a photograph from the failed meeting.

Daniel looked at Walter.

“You didn't know.”

Walter shook his head.

“No.”

For once, everyone believed him.

Then Eleanor said:

“Grace contacted me two weeks later.”

Walter turned sharply.

“You never told me that.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You never asked.”

The sentence landed between them like a door closing.

Grace had secretly reopened contact after Walter canceled the meeting.

The story had shifted again.

Walter had blocked Eleanor once.

May you like

Grace had gone around him.

And neither had told Daniel.
