Chapter 1 - THE BRACELET

Claire Bennett had already been warned about Daniel Hayes before she walked into Room 814.

Not by another nurse.

By Walter Hayes.

The sixty-eight-year-old had regained enough strength that morning to speak in short sentences, and almost every one of them had involved the same instruction.

“My box.”

The wooden box had been recovered from Walter's wrecked sedan after the accident. State police had released it with his personal property after photographing the contents at the scene.

Claire carried it beneath one arm as she entered the quiet private hospital room.

Warm daylight crossed the polished floor.

Walter lay elevated in the first bed, bruised badly along one side of his face, oxygen tubing beneath his nose.

Attorney Harold Reed sat near the window.

Daniel stood beside his father's bed.

The second bed remained hidden behind a fully closed privacy curtain.

Claire had taken three steps when Daniel turned.

He saw the box.

His entire posture changed.

“What's that?”

“Your father's recovered belongings.”

Daniel crossed the room.

Fast.

“Give it to me.”

“They're going to him.”

Daniel snatched the wooden box out of Claire's hands.

“Mr. Hayes—”

He threw it onto the floor.

The lid struck hard enough to open.

A pair of reading glasses slid halfway out.

“Stay away from my father.”

Claire immediately crouched and pulled the box toward herself before Daniel could reach it again.

Walter stirred.

“Daniel.”

“He doesn't need this right now.”

Claire looked up.

“Then you can discuss that without throwing his property.”

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Get up.”

Claire's expression changed.

“Let go.”

“I said get away from him.”

He tried pulling her backward.

Claire knocked his hand off.

Daniel reached again.

She shoved him back.

Not enough to knock him down.

Enough to create distance.

Walter raised one weak hand toward the box.

“Open it.”

Daniel froze.

Claire looked at her patient.

“You're sure?”

Walter nodded.

“Open.”

Attorney Reed shifted in his chair.

That was the first thing Claire noticed.

The old attorney had been quiet since she entered.

Now he looked worried.

Claire knelt beside Walter's bed and opened the wooden box fully.

Wallet.

Keys.

A broken pair of sunglasses.

A bloodstained handkerchief sealed inside a hospital property bag.

A watch.

Then something beneath it.

Claire lifted a damaged women's bracelet.

Thin gold links.

One clasp twisted.

Several small blue stones around an oval center piece.

Daniel saw it.

His face changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

He stepped closer.

“Where did that come from?”

Claire checked the property tag.

“Recovered with the vehicle belongings.”

Daniel stared at the bracelet.

“He was alone in that car.”

Claire looked at Walter.

Walter closed his eyes.

Attorney Reed stopped moving entirely.

Daniel pointed at the bracelet.

“My father was driving alone.”

Claire watched the three men.

Nobody looked surprised by the same part.

Daniel suddenly lunged.

“Give me that.”

Claire jerked her hand away.

“Stop.”

“Give it to me.”

He kept coming.

Claire slapped him across the face.

The sound cracked through the quiet room.

Daniel stopped.

Claire held the bracelet tightly.

“Then who wore this?”

Silence.

Walter slowly opened his eyes.

Then—

movement behind the privacy curtain.

Everyone turned.

A woman's hand appeared around the edge.

Pale fingers.

Hospital wristband.

One finger bruised.

She gripped the curtain.

The curtain remained completely closed.

No face appeared.

A woman's voice came from the second bed.

“I did.”

Daniel froze.

Walter turned his head toward the curtain.

May you like

Attorney Reed closed his eyes.

And Claire realized the bracelet was not the thing everyone in that room had been trying hardest not to see.
