Chapter 9 - THE RIVERTON TICKET

Riverton House had closed in 2016.
The building was luxury apartments now.
The old hotel's records had mostly been destroyed.
Mostly.
The former valet contractor still existed.
Daniel found one retired supervisor.
Calvin Moss.
Seventy-eight.
Sharp memory for cars.
Terrible memory for people.
When shown the Halcyon photograph, he smiled.
“I remember these.”
“This exact one?”
“Maybe.”
Rare cars passed through Riverton.
But 2:17 AM narrowed it.
The old nightly incident log had been donated to a hospitality training archive after the contractor changed owners.
There was an entry:
Guest vehicle arrived without standard plate. Driver refused overnight parking, requested fifteen-minute curb hold. Rear body damage noted.
Vehicle:
Gray Halcyon.
Driver name:
Mr. Grant
No identification checked.
Valet ticket:
matches.
Claire asked:
“Description?”
Calvin shrugged.
“White guy in a suit.”
Useful.
Age?
“Thirty to fifty.”
Even better.
Passenger?
Calvin frowned.
“Maybe.”
Then:
“I remember a woman.”
Claire leaned forward.
“Inside the car?”
“No. Came out of hotel.”
She spoke to the driver.
Then climbed into the passenger side.
Did the car leave with her?
“Yes.”
Could Calvin identify her?
No.
Twenty-two years.
No miracle memory.
But he remembered one detail.
“She worked there.”
“How?”
“Staff lanyard.”
Riverton employee.
Daniel found an old staff roster.
Hundreds.
Then Walter saw one name.
“Marianne Dale.”
Claire looked at him.
“You know her?”
“Mike Daley's sister.”
Walter’s old supervisor.
Not the same surname spelling because she married.
Marianne Dale had been Riverton's night events coordinator.
Still alive.
Living in Connecticut.
They called.
She hung up.
That mattered.
Claire called again the next day through counsel.
Marianne agreed to a meeting only after Daniel promised no recording without permission.
She arrived defensive.
“I did not steal a car.”
Nobody had said she did.
Good start.
Did she remember the Halcyon?
Yes.
Immediately.
Why?
Because Graham Cole came to the hotel.
Claire stopped.
“Graham?”
“Yes.”
Ryan’s father.
At around two in the morning.
Marianne had known him socially through her brother.
He arrived in the Halcyon with a transport driver.
That meant Graham returned after Walter saw him leave.
Mike had been right.
“What was he doing there?”
Marianne looked embarrassed.
“He wanted a room.”
“For what?”
“To make a phone call privately.”
Claire stared.
“Hotels had phones everywhere.”
“He wanted one nobody at Bennett could trace.”
There.
Graham used Marianne's office.
Called someone.
Who?
She did not hear the full conversation.
Only one line when she passed the door.
I'm not letting Frank bury me with this.
Then Graham left.
In the passenger seat.
Not driving.
“Who drove?”
Marianne shook her head.
“Transport guy.”
“Name?”
“No.”
“Was it Elliot Mercer?”
“No.”
She was certain.
Younger.
Maybe thirties.
Work jacket.
Graham got into the passenger seat.
The car left.
Marianne assumed he was returning to Bennett.
Instead, forty minutes later it arrived at Ridgeway.
Then what?
She never saw Graham that night again.
Claire called Ryan.
He listened.
Then said:
“My father never told me that.”
Walter said quietly:
“He was trying to stop something.”
Maybe.
Or protect himself.
Then Marianne gave them one more detail.
Before Graham left, he handed her an envelope.
“Why?”
“He said if anything happened, give it to my brother.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Everyone stared.
“Why?”
“Graham came back for it two days later.”
There.
“What was inside?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Mike know?”
“No.”
Marianne looked ashamed.
“I was twenty-nine and helping a friend's brother hide a meeting from his boss. I didn't think I was preserving Watergate.”
Fair.
Then Claire asked:
“Did Graham say where he was going after Ridgeway refused the car?”
Marianne shook her head.
“But he said something before he got in.”
“What?”
She looked at Claire.
“He told the driver, ‘If they won't take it, bring it to the pier.’”
Which pier?
Marianne did not know.
Daniel did.
In 2004, Northbridge maintained bonded export storage at Port Newark.
If the transporter went there instead of back to Bennett—
the car could have left the country.
Which would explain Belgium.
But why would Graham redirect it after trying to stop Frank’s mess?
May you like
Ryan asked that question.
Nobody had an answer.
