Chapter 13 - MARTHA BENNETT’S CALENDAR
Claire wanted to believe the token had fallen from somebody else's pocket.
Then she found her mother's calendar.
June 18, 2004:
Frank late. Claire SAT prep. Dinner w/ Susan canceled.
June 19:
One handwritten entry.
M. 3:30
No explanation.
Claire had been seventeen.
She remembered waking that morning and finding her mother gone.
When Martha returned around breakfast, she told Claire she had gone for a drive because she could not sleep.
That memory had meant nothing for twenty-two years.
Now it meant too much.
Claire called her mother's closest surviving friend.
Susan Palmer.
Did Martha ever mention Bennett's financial crisis?
Yes.
Everything.
Frank was terrified of losing the dealership.
Martha wanted him to sell one location.
Frank refused.
Did Martha know about the customer car collateral?
Susan went quiet.
“I don't know.”
“Did she ever mention Port Newark?”
Long silence.
“Once.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“When?”
“After Graham left the company.”
“What did she say?”
Susan remembered Martha saying:
I should have let Frank fail before I helped him fix what he broke.
That was all.
No detailed confession conveniently preserved.
Claire asked:
“What did she help him fix?”
“I never knew.”
Then Susan added:
“Martha was furious with Graham.”
“Why?”
“She said he made something worse trying to prove Frank wrong.”
Again.
Different interpretations.
Claire gave Daniel the calendar.
He searched old port-access sponsorship.
Martha's temporary token request had been submitted by Lydon Maritime's operations director.
Reason:
Client representative — asset reconciliation.
Client?
Bennett Motor Imports.
Authorized by:
F. Bennett
Frank had sent Martha to the pier.
That changed things.
Maybe she was not stealing the car.
Maybe she was trying to recover it.
Then Daniel found one port visitor log.
Martha entered at 3:11 AM.
Before the Halcyon arrived.
She left at 6:02.
The car arrived after 5:08.
Meaning Martha was waiting.
For what?
Claire stared at the timestamps.
Her father knew the transport was going to the pier?
Or Martha knew independently.
Then Ryan brought Graham's notebook again.
One fragment made sense now:
At the pier, Martha was already there. She said Frank sent her because he couldn't be seen.
There.
Claire sat back.
Her mother had gone to recover the car quietly before anyone noticed.
Graham arrived with Jonah.
Martha.
Graham.
Transport driver.
Port workers.
Then the car vanished into export custody anyway.
“What went wrong?”
Claire asked.
Ryan turned another page.
Martha said Elliot had already authorized release overseas. I told her Elliot wasn't there. She called Frank. Frank said leave it and come home.
Claire stared.
Her father told them to leave the car.
Why?
Daniel had a theory.
If the Halcyon had already entered bonded export storage under documents tied to the unauthorized pledge, removing it could create records proving Bennett had attempted to use customer property.
Frank may have chosen to report theft rather than create a paper trail recovering it.
Cowardly.
Potentially fraudulent.
Plausible.
But then:
Who actually created the export authorization?
The document said Elliot Mercer.
Did Elliot do it?
Samuel Mercer's later behavior suggested the family knew something.
Daniel contacted Diane Mercer.
She searched Samuel's personal papers.
One envelope:
HALCYON
Inside:
A letter from Elliot to Samuel, dated 2008.
Claire read the scan.
There is a car I mishandled years ago. I did not steal it, but I signed something I should have stopped. If it ever surfaces in Europe, stay away from it.
There.
Elliot admitted signing something.
Not what.
Samuel did the opposite.
He bought the car.
Maybe to reclaim it.
Maybe to understand his father.
Maybe because rare cars make people rationalize.
Then the last line:
The Bennett woman knows who gave me the authorization.
Claire stopped breathing.
The Bennett woman.
Martha.

Her mother had known whose authorization put the car into export.
And she died without telling Claire.
