Chapter 12 - THE CAR COMES OFF THE FLOOR

Claire removed the Halcyon from sale.

Publicly.

No dramatic press conference.

The showroom website changed:

VEHICLE WITHDRAWN PENDING PROVENANCE REVIEW.

The prospective buyer threatened to move his business elsewhere.

Claire accepted it.

The Mercer estate's attorney was furious.

Then less furious after seeing the 2004 records.

Samuel's widow, Diane Mercer, agreed to suspend consignment.

She had inherited a collection of thirty-two cars.

She knew the Halcyon was unusual.

She did not know why.

That mattered.

No villain widow.

The physical inspection happened under an independent appraiser.

Visible VIN plate:

replacement.

Secondary chassis stamp:

original.

Matched the 2004 missing vehicle.

The car was the car.

No question now.

Original insurer still existed through a successor company.

They reopened subrogation review.

The original customer, Harold Voss, had died.

His estate had been paid fully in 2004.

He had no direct current loss.

Title ownership became a lawyer problem:

Insurer rights after payout.

Foreign transfers.

Good-faith purchasers.

Statute issues.

Possession.

Not resolved overnight.

Correct.

Walter stood behind the inspection line.

He touched nothing.

Claire asked:

“How did you find out it was here?”

“Internet.”

“You search for it?”

“Sometimes.”

“For twenty-two years?”

“Not every day.”

He smiled slightly.

“I'm old, not haunted professionally.”

Then:

“I saw the dent in the listing.”

That brought him.

Not money.

He did not demand a reward.

Did not claim ownership.

He wanted his old statement corrected.

Daniel helped him submit an affidavit.

Walter included everything.

Graham drove.

Walter lied.

Frank pressured him.

Hardship bonus.

Northbridge men.

No embellishment.

Then Walter asked Claire:

“Is Ryan gone?”

“Yes.”

“For good?”

“From the company.”

Walter nodded.

“Good.”

No pity.

Claire asked:

“Are you filing a complaint over the shove?”

Walter thought.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want six months of calls.”

Fair.

The company still documented it.

Security banned Ryan from the showroom for ninety days except legal appointments.

Employment ended regardless of Walter's choice.

Then Ryan requested one thing.

Access to the car.

Claire refused initially.

He clarified.

Not alone.

He wanted to inspect the passenger-side carpet.

Why?

His father's notebook contained one line:

Look under passenger heel board if it ever comes back.

That sounded dramatic enough Claire almost said no on principle.

Independent appraiser agreed.

They removed the carpet panel.

Nothing hidden beneath in some secret vault.

One factory build card.

A 2006 Belgian service receipt.

And a tiny sliver of paper caught beneath the seat rail.

Daniel lifted it with tweezers.

Partial handwritten text.

...call Frank before you let Mercer—

Torn.

No date.

No signature.

Claire stared.

“Who wrote it?”

Handwriting analysis might help.

Not immediately.

Ryan looked at the fragment.

“My dad?”

“Maybe.”

Then the appraiser found something else.

Under the passenger seat:

A small plastic parking token.

Port Newark.

Old logo.

Serial number.

Daniel took a photograph.

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

He knew the numbering format.

“Employee lot token.”

“Whose?”

“Port Authority can check archival assignment.”

Two days later, they did.

Token issued in 2004 to:

MARTHA BENNETT

Claire froze.

“My mother?”

Her mother had died three years ago.

And as far as Claire knew, Martha Bennett had never worked at Port Newark.

She had been a high-school counselor.

Why would her parking token be inside the stolen Halcyon?

Daniel checked again.

Not employee.

Temporary contractor access credential sponsored by Lydon Maritime.

Valid for three days.

Beginning June 18, 2004.

The day before the disappearance.

Claire sat down.

Her father had hidden the collateral pledge.

Ryan's father had driven the car.

Elliot Mercer had been attached to the export paperwork.

Now Claire's mother had a port access credential inside the vehicle.

The story had just entered a room Claire had not known existed.
