Chapter 6 - Grace In The Clinic Window

Over the next week, the story spread through Cleveland faster than anyone at the department expected. Donations arrived at the clinic in bags and envelopes. A retired electrician built a custom whelping pen. An elementary class mailed hand-drawn paw prints and a blanket stitched with crooked blue hearts. Dr. Bell kept saying Grace had become “a whole city’s dog,” but when Daniel stopped by before shift, she always lifted her head first for him. He pretended not to notice at first. Mallory noticed enough for both of them. “You know she picked you,” she said one afternoon as Grace pressed her nose against Daniel’s wrist through the kennel door. “That’s dangerous.” Daniel laughed more than he had in days. “I live alone in a third-floor apartment and work nights.” Mallory shrugged. “So buy a couch cover.”

The puppies gained strength quickly. Their eyes had not opened yet, but they crawled toward warmth with more confidence each day, and Grace never let either one drift far from the hollow of her front legs. Dr. Bell showed Daniel the clinic photos from the first morning: Grace flat on her side from exhaustion, refusing fluids until the puppies were placed against her body; Grace lifting her head just enough to count them with her nose after every exam; Grace falling asleep only when both were tucked back beneath her chest. Daniel did not tell Mallory what the sight did to him. He had spent years seeing people at their worst—overdoses, domestic calls, traffic deaths, abandoned kids, the ugly edge of humanity. There was something almost unbearable in witnessing a creature with so little power make such a perfect decision to protect what was hers. That Friday, Detective Mercer called and said Russell’s attorney wanted to talk plea terms because the footage, the neighbor testimony, and the veterinary report had closed every exit. Daniel thanked her, hung up, and stood a long time looking through the clinic glass as Grace slept with one paw resting over the two puppies like a promise.
