Chapter 1 - The Sound Beneath The Lid

Officer Daniel Ruiz entered the abandoned house at 8:43 on a cold March morning after a utility inspector reported movement behind a boarded window. The property sat on the edge of Cleveland with peeling gray siding, a broken porch step, and an eviction notice curling behind the front glass. The electricity had been cut three weeks earlier. No one was supposed to be inside. Daniel, a forty-one-year-old patrol officer and former Army medic, moved carefully through the narrow rooms with his partner, Officer Mallory Chen. They found trash, rotting takeout boxes, and a few broken chairs, but nothing that suggested anyone had been living there recently. Then Daniel heard it. Scratch. Pause. Scratch, scratch. He lifted one hand, and Mallory froze beside him. It was too heavy for a mouse and too uneven for a pipe. The sound came again, weak and stubborn, from the back utility room.

They followed it to an old chest freezer beneath a cracked window. A rusted chain had been wrapped through both handles and cinched tight with a brass padlock. The freezer was unplugged, dusted over, and clearly secured from the outside. Daniel touched the lid, and something shifted beneath it. Mallory whispered that she would call for animal control, but Daniel was already moving for the bolt cutters in the patrol car. When he came back, he knelt beside the freezer and put his ear near the lid. “Police,” he said quietly, though he knew whatever was inside could not understand the word. “Stay with me.” The chain snapped on the third cut. As he lifted the lid a few inches, a pocket of warm, stale air pushed out against his face—and something inside pressed upward, fighting weakly for space.
