Chapter 3 - The Video From Next Door

Daniel returned to the house that afternoon with Detective Lena Mercer from property crimes and cruelty investigations. The freezer still sat open beneath the evidence lights. Its interior walls were scratched at the height of the dog’s paws, and near the bottom, protected beneath where she had lain, were two soft impressions in the fading condensation. That was when Detective Mercer arrived with the first neighbor-camera pull. A retired machinist across the alley had a motion-activated camera pointed toward the side yard. The video showed a man arriving at 1:14 a.m. carrying a canvas tool bag. He entered through the side door and came out empty-handed less than two minutes later. Then, eight minutes later, the mother dog appeared in frame. She ran low to the ground, frantic, nose working the air. She followed a scent trail through the same door and disappeared inside.
The second clip made Daniel’s stomach harden. The man had not left after all. He had waited just inside the utility room. As soon as the dog climbed into the freezer to reach the bag, he shoved the lid down, looped the chain tight, and walked out carrying a flashlight. He did not rush. He did not hesitate. He simply checked the lock once and left the property. The footage never gave a clean view of his face, but it caught a distinct detail: a red patch stitched onto the shoulder of a dark work jacket. Mallory recognized it first. “Cuyahoga Mechanical,” she said. The company handled abandoned-property cleanouts for banks and landlords. Detective Mercer made the call while Daniel stared again at the moment the mother dog entered that room willingly. She had not been trapped by accident. Someone had stolen her puppies, used them as bait, and waited for her to climb into the freezer after them. “He knew she’d follow,” Daniel said. Mercer nodded. “And he counted on nobody coming to check an abandoned house.”
