Chapter 5 - THE HIDDEN SYMBOL

The cold, distant authority in Dominic’s dark eyes evaporated, replaced by a razor-sharp, hyper-focused intensity.
He didn't yell at Claire. He didn't order his guards to throw her out. He simply stared at her face, his gaze tracing the structure of her jaw, the shade of her brown hair, and the deep, haunting panic in her eyes with an unnerving degree of scrutiny.
Sophie, completely oblivious to the intense standoff between the adults, pulled her head back slightly from Dominic’s shoulder.
"Thank you for the hug, mister," Sophie chirped softly, leaning back against his broad chest.
As the little girl pulled away, she adjusted her grip on her battered white stuffed rabbit, Mr. Buttons. In doing so, the long, frayed left ear of the plush toy flipped backward over its head, exposing the soft, worn linen underneath the base of the ear joint.
Dominic’s eyes instinctively dropped from Claire to the plush rabbit in the child's small hands.
His entire body went completely, terrifyingly still.
Stitched into the yellowed linen fabric directly beneath the rabbit’s left ear—hidden from view unless the frayed flap was pulled back—was a tiny, hand-embroidered symbol using faded dark-blue silk thread.
It was a delicate, highly specific geometric crest: a stylized crest depicting a crowned falcon holding an iron key in its talons, framed by two intersecting crescent moons.
It was not a brand mark from a toy manufacturer. It was not a generic craft design.
It was the private, centuries-old heraldic seal of the Valenti family's inner bloodline—a mark known only to Dominic, his late brother, and the highest ranking members of the syndicate.
Dominic stared at the faint blue stitching. The color drained from his sharp face so quickly that even Marco took a concerned step closer to his boss.

Slowly, without scaring the child, Dominic reached out his heavy, ringed hand. His long, tattooed fingers gently took hold of the stuffed rabbit's ear, lifting it half an inch higher into the bright sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He looked closer at the faded thread.
