Chapter 1 - THE MARBLE CORRIDOR

Daylight flooded through the dramatic floor-to-ceiling arched windows of Dominic Valenti’s sprawling Lake Forest estate, casting tall, elegant beams of sunlight across polished white Carrara marble floors. The grand main corridor, flanked by massive stone pillars and leading into a cavernous, high-ceilinged living room anchored by a crackling marble fireplace, radiated the quiet, terrifying wealth of Chicago’s most powerful syndicate family.
Down the center of the corridor marched Dominic Valenti.
At thirty-nine years old, Dominic was an imposing, physically imposing figure—tall, broad-shouldered, with dark wavy hair swept neatly back, sharp masculine features, and an athletic, model-like build. He had just returned from an intense, high-stakes meeting with rival outfit bosses in downtown Chicago. Consequently, he was dressed impeccably in a bespoke black three-piece tailored suit, a starched black dress shirt, a dark silk tie, polished leather shoes, a steel Swiss chronograph on his left wrist, and heavy signet rings on his tattooed fingers. Elaborate dark ink peeked out above his starched collar, tracing the left side of his neck and extending past his cuffs onto the backs of his hands.
Surrounding Dominic was an entourage of five burly security guards clad in matching dark charcoal and black suits, earpieces glinting under the chandelier lights. Their eyes scanned every corner of the estate with practiced, lethal vigilance.
As Dominic moved down the hall, household staff—valets, groundskeepers, and senior maids—immediately backed up against the walls, bowing their heads in silent, anxious deference. Dominic Valenti was cold, calculating, and famously unforgiving. Nobody blocked his path. Nobody spoke unless spoken to.
Then, halfway down the corridor, Dominic abruptly came to a dead halt.
His suit jacket flared slightly as he stopped short, his heavy leather shoes clicking sharply against the marble. The five guards behind him instantly fanned out, their hands reflexively resting near the buttoned lapels of their jackets as they assumed defensive postures.
Standing directly in the center of the vast marble hallway, blocking the syndicate leader's path, was a tiny three-year-old girl.
It was Sophie Bennett. She was remarkably small against the towering architecture, wearing a bright red winter dress trimmed with white faux fur, patterned white tights, tiny shiny red boots, and two slightly messy braids framing her big, expressive brown eyes. Clutched tightly in her little arms was a battered, well-loved white stuffed rabbit named Mr. Buttons, whose left ear flapped loosely from years of hand-stitched repairs.

Dominic stood tall, towering over the toddler, his dark eyes narrowing into an unreadable, icy stare.
"Who are you?" Dominic demanded, his deep, authoritative baritone echoing off the high stone walls.
