Chapter 3 - DOWN ON ONE KNEE

At the mention of her statement, Marco, the lead guard, took an instinctual, protective step forward toward the child, his heavy suit jacket opening.
"Hey, kid, back off—" Marco began, raising a broad hand.
Before Marco could finish his sentence or take another step, Dominic raised his left hand, spreading his long, tattooed fingers in a sharp, non-negotiable command.
Marco stopped instantly, stepping back into formation.
Dominic didn't take his eyes off Sophie. The cold, impenetrable barrier that had defined his entire adult life—a barrier that kept federal authorities and rival families at bay—seemed to crack under the gaze of a fearless three-year-old holding a frayed stuffed animal.
To the utter, speechless horror of every guard and staff member watching from the shadows, Dominic Valenti slowly bent his knees.
The feared billionaire crime lord lowered his broad frame until his right knee rested flat against the cold, white Carrara marble floor, bringing himself down to eye level with the little girl. The fabric of his tailored black trousers stretched over his knee as he folded his long arms over his thigh.
Sophie didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.
The moment Dominic hit the floor, she took three tiny, bouncing steps forward, walked right between his knees, and wrapped her soft little arms tightly around his neck, burying her face into the lapel of his black custom suit jacket.
Dominic went completely, rigid. His hands hovered in the air for a second, unaccustomed to holding something so fragile and harmless. His dark eyes flickered with a sudden, overwhelming surge of suppressed emotion. Slowly, meticulously, he brought his heavy, tattooed arms around her tiny back, cradling the three-year-old child gently against his broad chest.

At that exact moment, frantic footsteps echoed down the grand corridor.
"Sophie!" a panicked voice cried out.
