Chapter 9 - THE PROTECTIVE SHIELD

Gabriel reached down and picked up the metal spoon once more.

He didn't hesitate this time. He ate a second spoonful, then a third, consuming the warm, clean food with a quiet, deliberate reverence, taking in the nourishment his body desperately needed while honoring the memory bound to the recipe.

The physical weakness that had weighed him down since stepping out of the SUV began to recede, replaced by a renewed, fierce clarity of purpose.

When he set the spoon down, half the bowl was empty. He pulled a crisp linen handkerchief from his suit pocket, gently wiping his lips, before looking back up at Norah.

"You’re studying," Gabriel noted, his dark eyes drifting to the medical index cards peeking out from her apron pocket.

"Nursing," Norah whispered, still trying to process the strange, surreal reality unfolding in the middle of her shift.

Gabriel turned his head slowly toward Leo.

"Leo," Gabriel commanded, his voice returning to its full, authoritative strength—sharp, clear, and absolute.

"Yes, Gabriel?" Leo answered, stepping forward instantly.

"This diner is now under my personal protection," Gabriel stated flatly. "Assign two men to watch this block twenty-four hours a day. No one touches this building. No one bothers this girl. Her tuition, her living expenses, her safety—everything is taken care of from this night forward."

Benny, still hiding behind the kitchen counter, gasped softly, clutching his apron in disbelief.

Norah shook her head rapidly. "No... no, I can't accept that from you. I don't even know who you really are—"

"You know who I was to her," Gabriel interrupted softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding resolve. "And that is all that matters."
