Chapter 7 - RACHEL COMES HOME

Rachel arrived Wednesday evening.

Sarah opened the door.

For nine years, she had imagined what she might say if they ever met again.

None of it came out.

Rachel looked at her.

Sarah looked at Rachel.

Then Rachel whispered,

“I never stole from Dad.”

Sarah's eyes filled.

“I know.”

They embraced.

Chloe began crying before either woman did.

Ethan quietly closed the front door.

Later, at the kitchen table, Rachel laid out everything she had saved.

Old bank statements.

Emails.

Estate paperwork.

Copies of signatures.

She had spent years trying to understand how $92,000 disappeared from their father's account.

The forged withdrawal had one important detail.

The receiving account belonged to Harper Strategic Consulting.

Sarah stared at it.

“Daniel's company.”

Rachel nodded.

“He showed you a version with my account number.”

Sarah remembered the documents Daniel had brought home.

She had never questioned them.

Why would she?

He was her husband.

Rachel opened another folder.

“I found this three years ago.”

It was a scan of an authorization document supposedly signed by Sarah.

It gave Daniel limited authority over part of the estate.

Sarah examined the signature.

It looked like hers.

But she had never signed it.

Chloe whispered,

“He forged Mom too.”

Rachel nodded.

“I tried to tell you.”

Sarah remembered blocked calls.

Unopened letters.

Messages Daniel encouraged her to delete.

Every time Rachel tried to reach her, Daniel had been there.

Protecting Sarah, he claimed.

Protecting her from a toxic sister.

In reality, he had been protecting himself.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“When you stopped speaking to me, Daniel called.”

Sarah stared.

“He said you were devastated but needed time. A year later he told me you were having medical problems.”

Sarah's expression hardened.

“He used my illness.”

“Yes.”

“And Chloe?”

“He told me she might lose her place at school.”

Chloe looked away.

Rachel had sent $40,000 specifically for tuition.

Chloe had received none of it.

The room became silent.

Finally Ethan said,

“We have to stop him tomorrow.”

Rachel looked confused.

Sarah showed her the email.

You'll see the box Thursday night.

Rachel read it twice.

“What are you going to do?”

Sarah looked toward the backyard.

For twenty-one years Daniel had controlled what she knew.

What she believed.

Who she trusted.

Tomorrow night, that would end.

“We aren't confronting him yet.”

Ethan frowned.

“Then what?”

“We let him lead us to Evelyn.”

May you like

Sarah picked up Daniel's EXIT PLAN.

“And to the rest of the money.”
