Chapter 12 - EVELYN'S INSURANCE

Evelyn had taken the box.
But not to steal it.
She had delivered it to her attorney.
After speaking with Rachel, she panicked.
The buried documents proved Daniel's fraud.
But they also proved Evelyn's involvement.
Her attorney advised her to cooperate before Daniel moved or destroyed the evidence.
By Friday night, the box was no longer hidden beneath a tree.
It was secured as evidence.
Daniel didn't know that.
Sarah did.
Miriam arranged the next steps carefully.
The consulting clients were notified.
Mark provided corporate records.
Rachel submitted proof of every transfer.
Vanessa turned over emails in which Daniel described himself as divorced and financially independent.
Even Vanessa had been lied to.
Not about everything.
But enough.
The following Monday, Daniel's access to several accounts suddenly stopped working.
He called Evelyn repeatedly.
She didn't answer.
He called the bank.
Then another bank.
Then his attorney.
Sarah watched from the living room.
Daniel stormed downstairs.
“Did you do something to our accounts?”
“Our accounts?”
“Yes.”
Sarah almost smiled.
“Which ones?”
Daniel stared at her.
She continued.
“The one Rachel sent money into?”
Silence.
“The Northline account?”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“The Cedar Bridge account?”
His face changed again.
Sarah finished:
“Or the one you were planning to use in Portugal?”
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“Where are you going?”
“Out.”
“To Vanessa?”
He stopped.
Sarah stood.
“She knows too.”
For the first time in twenty-one years, Daniel had nowhere to hide.
Then the doorbell rang.
Two investigators stood outside.
They asked Daniel Harper to come with them for an interview regarding financial records connected to Harper Strategic Consulting.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
He didn't appear afraid.
He appeared betrayed.
As if she had broken some private agreement by refusing to remain ignorant.
“This is what Rachel wanted,” he said.
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“This family is going to lose everything because of you.”
Sarah looked at him.
“We were already losing everything.”
He opened his mouth.
Sarah continued.
“You were just making sure we didn't know who was taking it.”
Daniel was not arrested that afternoon.
Not yet.
But he left with the investigators.

And for the first time since Ethan saw the shovel beneath the tree—
Daniel did not come home that night.
