Chapter 6 - THE EXIT PLAN

Ethan photographed every page.
Daniel's plan was terrifying in its simplicity.
Over six years, he had created the appearance of financial collapse while moving money elsewhere.
Some came from legitimate consulting income.
Some came from Rachel.
Some came from marital savings.
Some came from accounts attached to Northline Holdings.
The documents showed that Daniel had deliberately stopped paying several household bills on time.
He had created debt.
Not because he lacked money.
Because he needed Sarah to believe they were broke.
The mortgage was the worst part.
There had been enough money to pay it.
Daniel simply stopped.
The spreadsheet projected foreclosure proceedings beginning shortly after October.
By then Daniel intended to be gone.
Another line read:
HOUSE EQUITY — inaccessible after default.
Ethan didn't understand.
Sarah did.
“He doesn't care if the house disappears,” she said the next morning.
“He wants it buried in debt so I can't fight over it.”
Chloe pointed at another spreadsheet.
“What is Cedar Bridge?”
Sarah shook her head.
But Rachel knew.
When Sarah called, Rachel went silent.
“Dad's lake property.”
Sarah frowned.
“What?”
“Remember the land near Lake Mercer?”
Their father had owned twenty-two acres.
After his death, Daniel told Sarah it had been sold years earlier.
Rachel disagreed.
“Dad transferred it into a family trust.”
Sarah felt sick.
“Whose trust?”
“Ours.”
Rachel emailed the original documents.
Sarah compared them to Daniel's files.
The land had been sold eleven months earlier.
For $740,000.
The seller listed on the closing statement:
Cedar Bridge Assets LLC.
The money disappeared into Daniel's network of accounts.
Now the gold bars made sense.
Portable assets.
Cash that couldn't be frozen quickly.
Daniel wasn't merely hiding an affair.
He had been dismantling Sarah's financial life piece by piece.
“I'm coming home,” Rachel said.
Sarah hesitated.
After nine years, the thought of seeing her sister felt almost as frightening as confronting Daniel.
But she answered,
“Come.”
That afternoon, Ethan returned to Daniel's computer.
There was one file he hadn't opened.
EVELYN.
Inside was a chain of messages.
Evelyn repeatedly warned Daniel that moving more money would trigger bank compliance reviews.
Daniel responded:
Then convert it.
Evelyn:
Cash creates exposure.
Daniel:
Gold doesn't ask questions.
Another message followed.
Evelyn:
And what about Sarah?
Daniel:
By the time she understands anything, I'll be gone.
Ethan photographed it.
Then he reached the final email.
Sent two days earlier.
Daniel:
Move the last 600 by Friday. Lisbon stays on schedule.
Evelyn:
Not until I see the box.
Daniel:
You'll see it Thursday night.
Ethan checked the calendar.
May you like
Thursday was tomorrow.
Daniel was planning to dig up the box.
