Chapter 9 - The Gathering Storm

The armored SUV glided silently through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, its tinted windows isolating its passengers from the storm outside. Inside the warm cabin, Andrew wrapped Ethan in a thick, dry wool blanket, sitting beside the boy as Ethan devoured a sandwich from the vehicle's private bar.

The physical danger had passed for the moment, but the psychological shift inside Andrew was monumental. The cold, ruthless crime lord who cared for nothing but power and territory was gone, replaced by a father driven by a terrifying, protective fury.

"Marcus," Andrew spoke, his voice dropping into a register that made the lieutenant pull his eyes away from his tablet.

"Sir?"

"The two men who were chasing him," Andrew said, his hazel eyes fixed on the rain streaming down the windowpane. "They wore tactical uniforms with silver insignias on the collar. Who operates in the downtown sector with that gear?"

Marcus’s fingers flew across his tablet screen, searching private intelligence databases. After a few seconds, his face darkened.

"The Vane Syndicate, boss," Marcus reported quietly. "Arthur Vane's private security force. They’ve been buying up properties near the docks for the last six months. Word on the street is Vane opened a private detention facility near the river."

Andrew’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth clicked. Arthur Vane was a rival syndicate leader—a ruthless, dishonorable man who had been attempting to expand his empire into Andrew’s territory.

Now Andrew understood the full picture: Vane had captured the boy's mother to find leverage, but the child had escaped into the night with the one key that could destroy Vane’s entire operation.
