Chapter 1 - The Impact in the Downpour

The neon signs of downtown Chicago flickered through a torrential downpour, their vibrant reds, electric blues, and toxic greens smearing across the slick, rain-soaked asphalt of an empty alleyway off Michigan Avenue. Cold autumn rain drummed relentlessly against metal dumpsters, fire escapes, and bulletproof luxury glass, filling the night with a steady, deafening roar. In this dark, rain-drenched corridor, Forty-year-old Andrew Whitman moved like a shadow through the storm.

Andrew was an intimidating figure—six-foot-three, built with broad shoulders, with black hair plastered across his forehead by the downpour. Sharp, razor-edged facial features framed cold hazel eyes that had witnessed decades of underworld violence. Dense ink covered his throat and crawled up his neck, disappearing beneath the upturned collar of a heavy, tailored black wool coat that glistened with rain. Andrew was a feared titan of Chicago’s criminal hierarchy, a man accustomed to absolute control, silence, and obedience.

As Andrew stepped past a puddle reflecting a flickering diner sign, a small, desperate figure erupted from the darkness around the corner.

Eight-year-old Ethan slammed full-force directly into Andrew’s torso. The sheer momentum of the collision forced the massive crime boss half a step backward, his boots splashing into standing water.

Ethan was thin, trembling, and completely drenched. His dark brown hair was soaked flat against his forehead, water dripping continuously from his small nose and chin. He wore an oversized, frayed denim jacket over a faded hoodie and damp cargo pants, with one shoelace untied and dragging in the mud. The boy didn't rebound or run away; instead, he threw both arms frantically around Andrew’s waist, burying his wet face deep into the heavy black fabric of Andrew’s coat.

Andrew stood frozen, his arms raised slightly in shock. In all his years in the underworld, no stranger—let alone a child—had ever dared lay a hand on him. His hand instinctively hovered near the holster beneath his coat, his eyes searching the dark alleyway for an ambush.

"Please..." the little boy sobbed, his small body shaking violently against Andrew’s waist, his voice choked with raw, suffocating terror. "Please... just hug me."

Andrew looked down at the soaked child clinging to him for dear life. A strange, unfamiliar instinct flared in Andrew's chest—a sudden, unyielding need to protect.
